How many channels?
5.1 channels
Hmm tricky. If you use the digital out from the sound card basic Onkyos (SR309) might be all you can get new, though look for older models higher up the line second hand for better quality (608 for example).

dude i got the asus hdav1.3 and found the yamaha RX-V667 but no where in stock. i'll into onkyo thanks. how comes its so hard to find sets which support 6 channel directthey should make more amps with sound card support. i may have to cancel my new speakers now

Plenty of amps have 'sound card support', why would you want to use the DAC on the sound card and then pass analogue to the amp? Better to pass digital to the amp then use its DAC, which is what they all do.
If you do have killer DAC on the card, then buy a bunch of stereo amps rather than a single 6 channel reciever - as you've seen, you can't get those that take analogue inputs for the budget.
edit: left field choice - have a look at car amplifiers..

so if i can buy an amp and connect my sound card to the ampwith a coxial cable it will play analogue sources no problem?
ive got this teufel mini amp thing and everytime i use the coxial cable there is no "5.1 direct" option. just 5.1 stereo and its annoying cuz it plays music through all the speakers :-/

so i thought i needed am amplifier with 5.1 analogue in and pre-out.
sorry im a total noob here
Which card have you got? The Asus ROG Xonar Phoebus (first post), or the hdav1.3 (post 5)?
edit: might as well add what speakers you already have as well![]()

i decided to give the asus rog back and gonna stick to the hdav1.3 deluve cuz they both sound the same to me. i prefer rca connectors too. ive got this speaker set comin soon http://www.teufelaudio.co.uk/home-ci...ema-p8108.html
OK cool.
Forget the daughter board for the hda1.3. For best sound you need to buy:
1x toslink cable, to go between the card and the reciever
1x AV reciever, for eg a second hand onkyo 608.
(+speaker cables if the 5.1 set doesn't come with any).
Use the optical adapter that goes onto the spdif output from the sound card, connect through the toslink cable to the onkyo. Plug in your 5.1 speaker set to the onkyo. Enjoy.
Another solution would be to take HDMI output from the sound card and take that over HDMI cable to the onkyo. Alternatively you can use a coaxial spdif cable. Lots of options![]()

ok cool sounds good to me,
just to clarify as soon when i do this, the onkyo amp will know how to encode any sources such as mp3 will play as 2.1 and when i watch mkv it will play 5.1 etc ???????
thanks dude u've been very helpful.
The encoding will be done by the sound card, the amp will decode. Double check that the card and the amp both talk the same encode standards (dolby digital?) and if they do they should sort themselves out quite easily.

oh coolio!! thanks for clearing all that up. i didnt know amps can play direct sources over digital connection. thought i needed a setting with six channel direct. thanks
