Funny thing i use to do a 50ml round trip on my maxi scooter each day to work so this "proper distance" doesn't hold water for me; it's just ingrained prejudice

On a big comfy 125- no problem. On a 50cc moped limited to 33mph- not so much.

TBH OP for a 2 mile commute a bicycle is going to be favourite, you're going to struggle to take more than 10 mins unless there's a steep hill or something. For the 15 mile trip to your folks, then a moped will make things quite a bit easier (albeit that it'll feel pretty dangerous if riding on A-Roads is required).

Yep going the pedal option, cheaper, I get fitter and easier to secure. Will possibly look into a 'beefier' option another time, thanks to all. :-)

either something like this: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165710 or this http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId_165534 would do you nicely. I've suggested Boardmans as 2 of my friend have bought variations on them, for a suprisingly small amount of money considering the kit you get on them. They are very nice bikes too. Other brands are available, but I would suggest that whatever you get, try and get a ride on it first. You're going to be spending a lot of time on it, so it has to be something you can ride comfortably, and also something that you WANT to ride, or else you're just going to get the bus
