Not a lot....
Want to know something that will make you sick?
My insurance, for my BMW,with it's V8 engine costs me...... $30 a month. 220GBP a year.
I am in the middle of nowhere. I think I paid 40 in Portland before I moved.
Many reasons.. It's the minimal legal amount of insurance on a car I bought for $500. It's a 740, which is statistically a very safe car, with a low accident rate due to the types of driver. Pilots have statistically the fewest number of claims, after farmers. I have no claims in the 6.5 years I've lived here.
My A4 Sline 1.9 TDi. 7 years NCD, 6k miles a year, driveway at night in decent area, I'm 30 years old. Still over £550 a year. I just don't get it.
My wife works as a fraud solicitor specialising in RTAs. She told me that a very very high number of claims that are proven to be fraudulent are by foreign family's running illegal insurance claim rings. I actually got a letter myself claiming I had been in an accident with some African guy, despite the fact I.was about 200 miles away, my car had no damage and there was CCTV evidence I was where I said I was Funny enough this didn't go any further.
I have to say that it's sad that the few make it hard for the many but it seems to be that people come over here to make as much money as possible by any means and then go back to their country of origin with plenty of cash and leave their convictions behind. I don't blame them either because the system is too soft on these type of people but their selfishness means that genuine, hardworking immigrants get painted with the same brush.

Insurance is weird the world over.
Our Ford KA with it's 1.3l engine costs us 28 Euro a month to insure, however our previous car which was a Pontiac Trans Sport 3.6l V6 7 seater cost us 13 Euro a month with the same level of cover.
I have never been able to figure that one out
Yeah its weird but its simple, as people have pointed out:
Ford Ka is an affordable little run around that gets driven by young drivers and often crashed or damaged which means it has a lot of negative statistics surrounding it.
Pontiac People carrier sounds relatively rare for Europe so there probably isn't a lot of statistics surrounding it, but the ones that are will be mostly positive as its the kind of car people drive around with kids in the back, so they take a lot of care and drive sensibly.
Little older fords are the worst, because they are cheap to run and cheap to buy they are very popular with young people. They do also make great first cars as they are pretty fun and easy to drive with good visibility!
My type R isnt any better though statistically... also driven by often *ahem* liable drivers. Totally worth it though!
My first insurance quote was ... memorable. 9 year old 1.4l Rover 400, 30 year old driver .... £1600.
To be fair, I'd only had my license a couple of weeks, but even so... I had done pass plus, but due to my age it made no difference to my premium.
One year's insurance - twice what I paid for the car. That one hurt...
Really? pass plus didn't make any difference for you? when I passed my test when I was 17 and got a £1400 quote on my Citroen AX TGE 1.1, 2 weeks later I completed my pass plus and my insurance dropped to just £700, I had a 50% reduction for completing my pass plus, maybe it was the insurance company you were with as to why it didn't go down, I found when I was looking around only some insurance companies lowered your premium when you completed pass plus.
