Effect of your Postcode on your Car Insurance

Hi guys.

YOU ALL KNOW that where you live effects your car insurance, right?

But have any of you ever got a quote online, and then changed the post code for a laught just to see what the premium chage was?

I have.. and it's eye watering!

Mid Luton Postcode... not pretty.
Middle of Yorkshire, no one for mile... cheap as chips.

It's probably naughty to suggest people get quotes for the sake of it, but I BET loads of you are due renewal anyway... so might be worth seeing what price difference it would be if you moved to rural Devon or a scrag end of Liverpool?

The thing that shocked me when I played around with Insurance was that keeping my car on the driveway was more expensive than on the street! Parked on the street surely it's easier for your car to be hit, wingmirror clipped, keyed by some scrote etc?!

Car on driveway means they know which house to burgle for the keys.

When I moved from my parents to my first house, the postcode change gave me over a £400 refund
The insurance was over a grand though.

I've not managed to get below £400 for the mondeo; think i'll see what happens when i say it's not on the drive anymore....

When I got quotes a while back, it was about 10% cheaper in Devon than it was just outside London. Not convinced that the Devon address was the safer one, either.

For my Aygo, last year I got quotes of £600 and £1100 for my student house in Guildford and parents house in London respectively.

Coincidently, at this moment I'm actually shopping for insurance for my new motorcycle - an ER6N. £210 vs. £420 for Guildford and London respectively.

So where I live, insurance is effectively double

Yup, it's a right con!

I've just got to 5 years (or was it 6?) NCB on my bike. Cheapest insurance I can get is about 50 quid now . I'll spend the extra and get the extra protection however (legal cover, leathers, helmet and such)

Out of interest, does anyone know what your postcode actually means for insurance purposes?

I mean, say you visited friends every weekend, presumably you don't need to put their postcode. But what if you were staying with a friend during the week, and were back at home, i.e. your billing address over the weekend? It just the place the car is most likely to be?

I can imagine a few are gaming the system.

Depends what the wording is in the contract. Mine's something like usual place of residence (and to usual place of work). So it is where the car is most likely to be. Putting something else would nullify the whole contract and remove their liability.
