Leaf blower supercharging, does it work?

.... and does it work better if your plane is on a treadmill?

Rather than arguing about it like the rest of the internet the guys from Roadkill tested out this myth with some amusing results, well worth a watch in my opinion as are most of the episodes in fact

Seen somebody trying it on a jimmy jeep while on a 4x4 course a few years ago. Haven't a clue if it worked because the jimmy spent most of the time on its side.

This reminds me of the folks that sell a generic car air filter with a 12v PC case fan attached and claim 10 bhp increases!

More cfm always equals more horsepower dude, just like racing stickers. That's an easy ten horsepower bump right there, fifteen if you can find something on the dash to wrap in carbon effect vinyl

Mighty car mods did something similar a few years ago:

BTW, check out their 'Gramps' build. Old Subaru with a beast of an engine.

Re: Leaf blower supercharging, does it work?

Shirley you would rig your car aircon to blow into the engine, turn it to cold and maximum fan for "supercharge with intercooler"

Interesting, I had no idea there was actually a marketplace on eBay for things like that until I started this thread... A fool and his money and all that jazz!

Although it has reminded me that I need to watch the project logs for Gramps. I remember watching the test and tune they did at the drag strip where they were trying to pull a ten second pass for the quarter mile (I think that was their goal anyway) and bookmarking the page but never going back so that's a playlist for me to go through again this week

The thing I found most amusing about the Roadkill test was that by using two stroke powered leaf blowers they actually put more horsepower in the boot than they gained under the bonnet, although they did gain some horsepower so fair play to them!

The sad thing is, seeing as most aircon units are belt driven that would actually be closer to a real supercharger than anything else in this thread

I wonder if you could do it in reverse, use the monza engine to supercharge the leaf blower!

Indeed, if only I had a pound for every time I'd brought up something Husqvarna related on here... I'd probably buy more of their kit. Husqvarna, if you're reading this, call me, it's a win win situation

Oh, and as far as lovely noises go if you've got a minute go and check out any one of their video's involving the muscle truck. That exhaust system is the very definition of bacon for your ears, nuff said.

Re: Leaf blower supercharging, does it work?

Funny you say that as I went back and watched them all this week along with some of their other builds so they picked things back up at the perfect time for me. Although the latest episode was pretty sad to see given the circumstances, especially having just watched the build up. I'm sure they'll get it back together though, it'd be a crime not to!!

It really opened my eyes to how interchangable parts are across the Subaru range too and how a parts book and some ingenuity can lead to a very interesting yet almost bolt in build process if you want it to. It was something I knew you could do on my kinda vehicle for instance and a lot of older GM/Ford's but I'd always thought of Japanese stuff as being that little bit more bespoke and harder to modify like that so that was really cool. Despite being from what seems to be a very different background engineering wise Turbo Yoda seems like my kinda bloke to.

All in all taking a wagon like that on and getting it to pull an 11 second pass is hell of an achievement. A little more boost and some strip rather than street tyres and they could be chasing tens which is mind boggling when you consider the money they spent and the amount of horsepower and cubic inches hot rodders throw down to hit similar figures. Four wheel drive helps out a lot there though I guess, looking forward to seeing where they go with the car this season now

I think they can push the boost much further than it is at the moment as well, its relatively conservative IIRC. Have you seen the one that was uploaded yesterday? Its not hugely awesome but they assess all the damage.

Re: Leaf blower supercharging, does it work?

Yeah if I recall correctly they were running less than 10psi because the engine internals were stock and being an unusual conversion they were unsure as to how much it could handle. I'm sure they could turn the wick up on it a bit more than that with some careful testing and tuning. I didn't know there was another episode up, the one I watched a couple of days back ended on the cctv footage of the freak storm, thanks for the heads up I'll go check the new one out now
