Really? This pic suggests the redline is around 5k: http://cdn1.autoexpress.co.uk/sites/...?itok=cLOrUc-Z
I don't think there are any diesels that'll do 7000 rpm without blowing the engine.
More to the point, I thought diesel doesn't burn fast enough to work at those revs so you would be generating black smoke rather than power.
Back in the 1980's I managed to get my old A series engine mini up to well over 7000rpm. Rubbish gearbox and inexperienced driver, accidentally selected first at about 30mph. Somehow it survived
7000 rpm is easy in a petrol car; many engines rev that high naturally. Mine has the limiter at 7400 rpm for instance.
I managed to blow the cooling system in my old Rover 400 courtesy of a slippy gearbox. Pulled up at the roundabout at junction something-or-other on the M42, slipped it into first, saw a gap that was *just* big enough, hit the accelerator, dropped the clutch, gearbox slips out of first and I think I hit around 6k before I realised I wasn't moving Cue huge clouds of steam as something in the recently repaired cooling system gives way again and dumps coolant all over the engine.
Somehow I managed to get her to Bromsgrove, do a day at work, drive her home, and THEN get her to the garage in the morning, without it overheating and doing the head gasket. Gotta love those K-series engines
Also, giving your age away a bit there
I was driving a vehicle based on a Peugeot Boxer chassis it has big side mirrors (two electrical steered and heated in each pod). Went past a builders open truck based on the same chassis. I was being very cautious, he wasn't and bang went my mirror. I don't know about his as he didn't stop. And of course I didn't get his number.
The mirror was a relatively reasonable £300 and took me half an hour to fit.
There is an additional cost of £65 for the Dashcam and SD card I have ordered.

Ah yes, but petrol is a nice fast burning fuel at relatively low compression.
Diesel is somewhat slower burning, and the higher compression ratio is harder on engines at high revs.
I like revs, I think that's why I like Italian car engines and miss petrol.
Good job I didn't mention that my favourite CPU is the 6809
Slightly surprising mine revs so high given it has a 12.5:1 compression ratio, and is a square stroke ratio.
Nice!
I bet you miss the Passat really
<runs and hides...>
Edit to add: Bit of an aside, but I saw an i8 for the first time the other day. Very nice looking car, for the money I would probably go for a Tesla S (and keep the change) but still it looked rather nice.

The Passat is a terrible car, by people who hate cars, for people who hate cars. That it won car of the year shows that we need a movement for ethics in motoring journalism.
The Passat IVI system forgot how to output to the speakers twice, and how to read from USB once, in the time I had it (requiring a shutdown/exit/lock/unlock/reenter/restart dance)
The Passat auto-engine-shutdown system does not differentiate between "car is off" and "car is ready to pounce", as far as the steering lock goes - so I'll be waiting for a gap in traffic to turn right & there's a 1 second delay after I hit the accelerator before I can actually turn the wheel
The Passat aircon system doesn't remember if it's set to "maximum A/C", even though it's an analog knob - you need to raise the temp slightly then lower it again, or it doesn't cool properly
The Passat touchscreen has a much larger sensitive area for "setup" than "next track", making it super easy to press the wrong thing
The Passat diesel lag is the worst diesel lag. It's about a second before it revs up enough to start moving. Combine it with the engine shutdown taking a second to boot the car back up, and it's unbearable for turning right at busy junctions
The Passat boot opening button (in the driver door, or on the key) doesn't open it enough to actually open it. You need to be standing there pulling the boot open as you press the button. Or 2 second afterwards when it actually works, anyway
The Passat windscreen wipers are also firm believers in the lag that permeates every system in the vehicle. Turn off car, wait 2 seconds, wipers wipe *again* then decide they've had enough, mid screen.
The Passat auto gearbox sometimes forgets to boot up. Twice I've started the engine, taken the parking brake off, shifted into drive, and... slowly started rolling backwards, as the car remains in neutral.
Um... I think I might have forgotten a few.
