I've met EJ before and that time he was sat on a box drum playing a tambourine. The spoons sounded better, which is something I suppose.

I went on holiday after the first episode and I only got around to watching the rest this weekend (episode 4 was probably the best if anyone wants to try).

I'm not sure about Rory Reid. He's very likeable and on a another program he'd be an excellent presenter. He's obviously very serious in his outlook though, and I wonder how he'd cope with being twitted under stressful situations. But I suppose even if he does struggle then that itself could make good TV.

Matt LeBlanc was good but I got the feeling that he was doing a lot of his comedy on his own rather than sparring off someone else. Whether that was because Evans was in the way and, if not, whether he can sustain that is an interesting question.

Eddie Jordan, Sabine Schmitt and Chris Harris were all good too.

Hardly a major annoyance to the people surrounding them compared to some of the things clarkson et al did. That's just part of Top Gear and I'm sure they'd have stopped had they been asked to.

You certainly wouldn't want Eddie Jordan in big doses but I thought he was very appropriate to the segments he did. Of course you want the 'baddie' taking the train on a car show to be smug and condescending. I look forward to seeing him modify a car as part of a banger segment next series.

So, anyone want to comment on The Grand Tour vs the new Top Gear? Am I the only one feeling a bit disappointed?

Episode 1 was great, Episode 2 was poor, but still better than any Evans Top Gear episode. At this point I'm wondering if the BBC will bother to try again at a Top Gear replacement.

I'm left concluding that as with any divorce, neither party has come out of it unscathed. Such a shame for all concerned.

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

It was OK. I got the same feeling as I did towards the end of their Top Gear series, a slight ennui that had me reaching for my phone to look at facebook. I might be in the minority, but on a car show, I want to see reviews of cars. Stunts and games are all very well but when the show is more stunt than cars, I get bored.

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

TGT was nice in that it had the guys back together, and I'm glad they have ditched the celebrity segment, so long as they don't overdo the "guest dying on the way in" bit, as I think twice is too much for that "joke".

I'm worried that episode one has burned their ace card already (918/P1/LaFerrari showdown) as that was the big one that TG couldn't do, even when Clarkson, Hammond and May were still presenting it.

Episode 2 had potential but wasn't interesting at all, they do need some more cars.

I'm also hopeful they get rid of the American "Racing driver", I find it hard to believe Amazon insisted on having him. But they'll probably need to re-run the times if they do get rid as he looks, well, very heavy.

So, for me it's better than the new TG, but 2 episodes in they've had a hit and a miss, lets hope it trends upwards for ep 3.

GT is a bit meh. Just more the same. Wonder if Amazon will do another series? Wasn't cheap. Kind of hoping the BBC will morph top gear back into more of a car show with challenges rather than challenges with the odd car its become recently?

the beeb will do whatever they can think of to generate some revenue. They needed TG more than TG needed them.

Didn't see either, so no opinion.

I don't have Amazon Prime and I'm certainly not paying for it for TGT, so if/when it shows up on some free channel, I'll give it a try. Maybe.

As for TG with CE, the only way I'm watching that is if someone ties me to a chair, points me at it and staples my eyelids open. Even without him, the lineup appeals about as much as root canal surgery.

    the second episode: 1.5 / 5 stars

I don't mind the show being more about entertainment than a car show (as it has been for years) but if it's going to be as cringworthy as it was for the latest episode then I'm out

So much better without Evans... Dare I say it, better than TGT.

Re: So did anyone watch the "new" Top Gear?

Yeah this season is much improved. Was at the filming of the last episode of the last episode on Wednesday. Interesting to see how it works but wouldn't want to do that again, takes way too long.

Quick take away, MLB seems better in the flesh than on TV. CH is much nicer in real life than TV persona and Rory is the opposite.
