Favourite alloys of all time?

Hi all

I had a great chat last night with lots of motortrade dudes, many of whom are motorsport participants too....and having chatted through classic cars....we got to a heavy debate....on wheels!

Now I HATE wheels that are too large for a cars design and spec. I cannot bring myself to like 19"s on anything in the family car sized mould. To me a golf on 19"s makes me shudder.

But having said that....unsurprisingly...I'm an alloy snob as well.

Two alloys came out as popular..... One very much so.

Care to guess?

They look lovely on any Strato's, or Ferrari 308 in a pinch

Utterly gorgeous, on the right car, I agree, but two things :-

1) "Alloys"? Last set like that I saw were chromed steel, with chromed "wires".

2) They're an unadulterated bastard to clean. That's what I was doing with the last set I "saw", and it provoked a more or less non-stop stream of language I'd hope my mother wouldn't understand.

My favourite? The standard (well, optional upgrade, but BMW nonetheless) alloys on my M3, repainted from the light silver to a more subtle "shadow-smoked" light silver. They're low key, unpretentious, attractive but dead easy to keep clean.

I can't imagine what Zak's mates came up with, but I'd guess you'd get a different answer depending on the exact crowd, and probably the age of the crowd too. But I'd guess that favourite alloys are a bit like fabourite films .... tastes vary hugely.

Apparently not having coffin spokes is a deal breaker for some on whether they buy a Stratos replica.
