    Re: Second hand car

So I had a few spare minutes last night and did two insurance quotes -

Alfa (which I hadn't considered) came in at £950 which is about £200 more then my Corsa
Swift Sport (Which I had thought of) came in at £830 which is less than £100 more than I pay for the Corsa

My booking with the garage got brought forward so I find out tonight what happens with the car..

Panda 100HP? It's a lot less fuel efficient than an iQ despite the same 10hp/ton, and a higher insurance group, but reviews say it's more fun to drive.

It's more conventional in design but nevertheless good looking, the 100hp grille & body trim works well. I was admiring a well kept one in a car park the other day.

    Re: Second hand car

Sorry but the obvious, dull, choice is the Ford Focus or Fiesta. Both some of the best cars to drive. Thousands of them around in good condition for the price. Cheap to insure and repair.

Good shout, for some reason hadn't even though of it.

What are peoples thoughts on the Bora / Passat? I know they are VW and VW is usually (i believe) considered nice and strong and ive seen a few that are quick cheap and look to be in decent condition

    +1 for the Focus.

I had a Passat, and probably still would if someone didn't rear end it at 50+mph and write it off. I loved it. The Focus is a better choice for handling though - I had a 2.0 Titanium as a company car, and it was difficult to fault.

Golf or A3 are also great choices - I'm driving an A3 sportback atm - but they are pricey in comparison to a Focus.

Depends which model of Passat. The ones with the electronic hand brakes have a shocking reliability score due to their habit of randomly disengaging.

These days I think the strength of VAG cars is higher in reputation than in reality. They do quite poorly in owner surveys (mind you, so do Ford etc.). That wouldn't put me off owning one (last two cars have been A3s) but it'd make me choose spec carefully to keep things simple. Specifically on the passat, a very 'grey' car - does what it does well with no real personality. If you can go that large, consider a mondeo and you'll get both more fun and more car for the money. If you're happy to go high miler then an old A4 might be worth a shout too. Octavia would be another. Worth mentioning though that parts and repairs for VAG cars are a step higher than Ford/Vaux.

That's my impression too. See plenty of them broken down, if I just wanted reliability I would be heading for something Japanese.

Hmm, Corsa to a GT might be a bit mind bending. Long wheelbase and tricky rear visibility make reversing an art form so coming from a larger car you might be OK but would probably do your head in That and the cheap ones are all diesel (the 2.2 petrol engine is a general motors unit and while I haven't tried one they get badly slated for having none of the charm of an Italian engine, also the V6 is way out of your price range).

I shall revise my Alfa choice to something more practical, 3K should get you a 147 with a choice of petrol engine from 1.6 to 2.0 at about 2006 age (whiich is when they had a face lift, look for the headlight layout to easily tell which one a car is).
Alternatively, you could get something younger and lower mileage in an Alfa Mito depending on how you are with the Marmite styling and only having 95bhp which seems to be what all the cheap petrol models have.

Already mentioned the Octavia (coz I have one)
Basically any model that found use as a taxi will be a pretty safe 2nd hand bet.

Audi - Quite reasonable on the build and features, but pricey especially on the Audi only parts. Lower end models can sometimes be bested by higher end VWs.
VW - Taxi models are quite reasonable, perhaps more so than Audi. The rice-able cars like the Golf are a complete lottery nowadays.
Seat - A bit more delicate but tend to have less PITA problems.
Škoda - Usually better kept and last well, parts are cheaper than most VAG, a few models can be a bit tetchy with the electrics. Laurin & Klement trim is luvverly, without breaking the bank.
Porsche - Old ones can be had for quite cheap, but parts will cost a bomb still.
Lamborghini - Countaches are gorgeous pipe-dreams for 80s kids. Other models are nice enough, but parts are still awkward.
Bentley -Yeah... no. I said no.... I said NO!!!
Bugatti - Sure, go for it. 2nd hand Veyron, everything you could hope for. Whatever, man.
Ducati - Dry clutch sounds like cack. Go get a proper motorcycle.
Scania - OK, you're really not taking this seriously now, are you?

Basically if you can substitute a high end VAG part for the same one off a cheaper marque, you're laughing. It's then all down to how you personally feel living with the particular model.

    Re: Second hand car

The parts bin between VAG cars is pretty close. A worn clutch on a Golf is going to be the same part on Audi's, Skoda, Seats etc. It's only when you start getting into the more exotic cars that the parts get more expensive, as they need to be more bespoke to the vehicle.

That said, you try buying yourself a replacement wing mirror for an R8 and work out where they're getting the unicorn dust that must be going into the glass to justify the price tag.

^ Yup, engine parts and some internals are either the same, or at least compatible. Headlight switches, for example. My engine is the exact same one in the Golf.
But steering wheel, armrest, bonnet release... stuff like that is pretty unique and that's where the costs start to factor in.
In truth, the armrest is almost exactly the same one, but the foot shroud is slightly different and the cost difference is notable.

Even the 'budget' VAG brands are significantly more expensive parts than the likes of Ford/Vaux in my experience. We used to run a Seat and an Audi, now run an Audi and a Ford, and while the Ford had to have some lengthy investigations it's still been the cheapest to fix up and service.

How old/big are you willing to go?

    £3k will get you a Jag X-Type or S-Type at around 12 years/120k miles....

In my experience, you also get what you pay for.
Fords are popular because they're cheap, but that just makes them less expensive to fix when they break more often. I also see a LOT more Fords and Vauxhalls being sworn at for their stupid design and illegitimate offspring awkward repair/fitting requirements.

To be honest, ive not really thought about the age of the car.

I mean, ive looked at cars from around 1999 / 2000 so I guess "age is but a number".

I will go through autotrader and this post tonight and look through cars and get quotes and see which tickles me the most...
