Re: First car highs and woes.

Some insurers grant NCB for named drivers on a policy, but it's not a rule. I think Admiral did it for the Mrs when we got a second car.

That said, do not have the car registered to yourself, be the primary driver, and then have somebody else hold the policy in their name with you as a named driver. Most domestic policies require that the policy holder is the registered keeper and primary user of the vehicle.

Garaging your car for insurance is an interesting one. Whilst it helps stop your car from being pinched, you'd be surprised at how many people drive into the shelves at the back or smack the wall. If you do say you keep the car anywhere special then you tend to only be insured if you do that (e.g. forgetting to garage your car at night means it's uninsured).

Re: First car highs and woes.

No fear, we truthfully declared everything on the insurance. Adding spouse put the cost up. Adding anyone else torpedoed the quote. So no, not worth it in my instance. I'll prob add relatives for the odd weekend here and there if they are visiting by train but the base insurance is just me and my wife. Interesting learning from this - get your quotes as far ahead as possible. If you wait until a few days before you need it you end up paying significantly more. Now if I'd just realised that two months ago... Mind you, we weren't sure what car we were getting then so it wouldn't have helped very much anyway.

Companies we found in our hunt offering NCB on named drivers were Direct Line, Aviva and one other, but I can't recall who. It would only apply if the named driver stayed with that company however.

Probably less drink driving is the root cause there.
get this one- garaged cars made more claims in 2014 -15 so in 15-16 and this year, it's cheaper to have you car on the drive, cos people who tick "parked on drive" have less accidents than people who tick "garaged"

it's not to do with the accident HAPPENING on the drive or in the garage.. it's just a LOT of data shows it to be like that
Old farts garage their cars. Most normal people do not.

Re: First car highs and woes.

    Insurance quotes are nuts.

If before you had done a quote on a slightly different car, even just another colour, you could well get a different quote.

Some weeks back there was an item on the radio where they were discussing how repeated quotes on comparison sites could drive up your quote. They never did get a good explanation for that.

My car has a stainless exhaust back box, that changes quotes anywhere from not at all to over double the normal car.

    Edit for crosspost:

... and yet if you store an old Corsa for 25 years it will go up 10K. Yeah, not worth it is it

Perhaps this is to do with modern garages actually being too narrow to fit a car in, so an attempt to do so will end in an insurance claim

The only cars I ever see in garages are exotic enough that you can't sensibly or at all insure them on the driveway.

Yeah, I want to get front fog lights fitted (by a dealer) and install a central rear headrest. But that means declaring "modifications from factory spec" as the car did not ship with them (they were both an optional extra). Now to me both of these are a safety matter, but to the insurer they will use it as a means of increasing the price. Nuts isn't it!?

Yep. I looked at a brake upgrade on a car I had in the past because I thought it would make the vehicle safer, but it counts as a performance upgrade and didn't seem worth the yearly premium.

Unless you really go for it. If you change absolutely everything on the car it gets classed as a kit car, and custom vehicles tend to be well looked after because of the amount of work you put in it so the insurance can drop compared to the original car. Funny old world.

Another way to drive down insurance is ... get a full driving license but don't drive. So, you let your shiny license card sit around for a few years. When you apply for insurance, they ask how long have you held your license, not how long have you been driving.

Many insurance policies include a clause that you're covered for occasional use of someone else's car, as long as they're insured on it & gave permission. So adding relatives for a weekend or two may not be needed, depending on their insurance (or it might be handled by your insurance? I forget).

You have to check both parties policies.

Nope. That sounds good but believe me, it has not helped. One insurer wouldn't even care if you'd been on a company car for donkeys. Is this YOUR first policy? Then ka-ching!

It is only 3rd party in that case, and frankly, I would want my car protected if the worst happened. It is still worth something, and I wouldn't be able to replace it outright.

Re: First car highs and woes.

I was lucky and for the first few years of driving I was insured through my company's car scheme. It meant that I had two or three years with no "claims" as they just paid for any damage that happened to the car. In those days, insurers didn't ask about accidents, just claims. And a letter from my company detailing how long I was on the scheme without a claim was enough to count towards a NCB.

This really helped me, but obviously is fairly unique and lucky.

There are mod-friendly insurers out there. And they don't tend to put your premium up for non-HP-increasing mods. I've got slightly up-rated rear brakes, and have to declare custom alloys as I put a cheapo set on for winter.

For the best prices, sign up to a car forum or club that has discounts with a broker. Brokers give the best prices.

I got reduced insurance quotes from some companies by completing the Pass Plus course. Basically 3 hours driving on a motorway with my instructor.

    For me the kickers were:
"How many accidents have you been involved in?"... Not driving, not even in the car, but merely involved...

"You had one accident in 2013, but only got your car licence in 2015... We don't insure people who drive without driving licences"... Clearly they haven't heard of motorcycles.

"You do NOT live with your parents? You mean you actually earn more than just pocket money and Bob-A-Job coins? Wow, you must be rich... Let us charge you something insanely high, then".... Let me take my business elsewhere, then.

Eventually I found someone who would take into account the many years of biking on stupidly fast machines and the experience that came with that, along with 2 years of company vehicles and being a named on other policies, getting a reasonable quote for about £400.

Sounds about right. I had someone reverse into my correctly parked car in a car park when I wasn't in the vehicle. They fessed up and their insurers paid, but my *wifes* insurers wanted to put her insurance up because a named driver (me) had a no fault accident on record. Needless to say she changed insurers.

Don't get me started on the protection racket that is the modern protected no claims bonus though...

I don't suppose a bike insurer would be interested in how many years I've been driving my car accident free either.
