Corolla is a reasonable sized hatch, Yaris obviously smaller but both will easily take a car seat in the back.
Edit - given the age, I would doubt isofix compatibility though.
Did you ever check the for the Honda Jazz 1.3?
If you can get a decent model Jazz with the magic seats then it will basically fill any role you need it too
Please remember all I did was a quick search on some rough ideas in an area close to you based on other suggestions, I didn't look in any detail at the history of the car, those cars general reliability, common problems and I certainly didn't look at the car physically to see if it has any unreported crash repair (always check the "lines" of a car are smooth).
Have a look on the owners forums for that car, they usually have a thread somewhere with used buying tips and tricks.
You should always go into a car hunt with at least 3 solid options IMO
At least now you know its possible to get more affordable insurance, you just have to find the right make/model.
My girlfriend has a 2005 Yaris and it's a solid little car, still runs fine despite being 12 years old! You see quite a lot around of that age which is a good yardstick for reliability I think.
I'll remember that next time I'm offering free rides in my Lambo...
But no Škodas, then...?
No SEATs?
No Porsches, Bentleys, Bugattis or Lambos?
TBH, the cars we get in for general works most tend to be small Toyotas, VWs and BMWs,
The ones we get in most for repairs are Fords, Golfs, newer Mercs Peugeots and BMWs. I refuse to work on the latter two, unless merely assisting.
Minor works and project assistance would be older Mercs, Chryslers, Jeeps, collectors cars (Mustang GT Cali Special!!!) and a few nicer ones like the Lexuses (Lexii?), M3s, Supras, GT4s, etc. No-one has ever brought in a Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag, since I've been there.
The cars most abused and unmaintained are the Golfs and BMWs because they're reckoned to be "so reliable and obviously don't need things like oil changes", because they're actually very awkward to maintain, or just because the owner is a BMW driver!
Only once had a Škoda in for proper work - The owner had been the victim of a clueless garage whose work resulting in the engine shearing off, and the owner ended up handing us the key & V5 instead because it was cheaper than the repair would have been!
So for that same car I got quoted £650 on yesterday i just double checked and it's now £1.9k.. Even used the same license plate.
Are you quoting online or on the phone?
If Toyotas do turn out to hit the pricing sweet spot then the Verso might be worth a look, technically still a corolla but a bit bigger and kid friendly. The back seats also had built in boosters in the one I had briefly.
