    650TX Fan makes chirping noises

    Hi,

Just purchased a 650TX PSU from Scan and noticed the fan making a distinctive chirping noise.

Took the PSU out of the case and switched it on - bare on my desk with the green wire jumpered and just a CD Drive hooked up for load, and yes the fan definitely makes a chirping noise - no doubt about it!

RMA'd the unit back to SCAN and they claim no fault found and now will probably request additional payment before the unit is returned to me.

I've built many PCs and know what a PSU fan normally sounds like both brand new and years down the line - a premier make brand new PSU fan should not be making any chirping like noises!

If Scan dig their heels in on this then I have a real problem - I'm awaiting their response to my repeated claim of a faulty fan, and I fear it's likely to be - pay us a testing fee and postage to get the unit back!

Does Corsair have a UK operation that can sort this out and be a technical authority on this.

Posted this issue on the US forum but got no answer yet.

Our best solution is to simply replace the PSU for you. Our RMA process will likely direct you to ship the PSU to our hub in NL. We will ship you a new PSU.

Re: 650TX Fan makes chirping noises

Thank you for your quick reply.

This is a brand new unit, and the UK retailer SCAN now has it.

Unless I can convince them that the fan is making this noise - I'm stuck with the prospect of paying them extra for testing and it's return to me.

Furthermore, I would then have to pay to ship it to yourselves in the Netherlands.

SCAN state that they have run the PSU on a system on full 100% CPU load and they say they cannot hear any noises.

I have advised them that this is not necessary, and that all they should do is run the bare PSU by itself with minimal loading and actually listen to the fan as I did - it clearly makes an abnormal chirping noise unlike the normal whoosh that one would expect.

All I wish to do - is prove that the fan is faulty. The product cost me £56 last week - it may now end up costing me nearly as much to get a replacement.

This is proving to be a nightmare!

SCAN are insisting there is no fault and are going to charge me £35 + VAT = £41.13 to return the unit to me.

So I will pay the fee and then have the unit independently tested by someone here in the UK to prove that the fan is faulty!

Got the fan back and yep it's still noisy despite SCANs assessment. Paid £41 to get it back from SCAN - will now contact my local Trading Standards to advise me - possible independent lab test to prove that it is faulty and then Small Claims court to sue SCAN!

Re: 650TX Fan makes chirping noises

£41 sounds steep. They cost barely more than that. I got the same PSU from Scan, but mine is pretty much quiet.

While I probably wouldn't have RMA'd the PSU if it was like in the video due to laziness, it sure does sound very loud, perhaps the guy at Scan was deaf?

Re: 650TX Fan makes chirping noises

Just got an Antec 750W to replace the faulty Corsair.

I've posted two more revealing videos on YouTube.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPAi0yHS7ww
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXdUbH-v12g

SCAN have informed me that in their opinion the noise levels between different manufacturers may differ and that this unit contains no fault, is as described, is fit for purpose i.e it will power a machine without fault.

I've no doubt Corsair would replace it - but why should I spend yet more to send the unit to the Netherlands - I've already paid SCAN an additional £41 just to get this faulty unit back. Remember this is a brand new unit purchased last week!

I have no choice but to take this to the Small Claims Court and recover my money. It may take several months but it's going to be worth it!

Re: 650TX Fan makes chirping noises

good on you, have you pointed out to scan that this is advertised as ultra quiet, that kinda puts there reply as BS entitling you to a refund of your £41, an apology and a new psu.

sadly corsair should have stepped in and told scan to swap this, its a shame it has got this far but i guess there is still time. I have been forced to instruct scan to return a product they deemed as working back to the manufacturers before and a new units been returned. you should have refused there "opinion" and asked the same.

Yep, this is in my correspondence with SCAN ...

As I have already stated and illustrated on YouTube, the PSU has a fault. The problem is that the PSU cooling fan is making a grinding or chirping like noise, which is unacceptable. It certainly does not conform to the product specifications with regards to noise - stated on the manufacturers website in various places e.g.

    http://www.corsair.com/highqualitypower/default.aspx

    3. The PSU must be quiet.

You want to use your PC to hear music and games, not the hum of a heavy-duty fan. High quality PSUs use large-diameter fans which can spin at lower RPMs. High-quality PSUs also intelligently control fan speed based on temperature, so they never make more noise than they need to.

    Corsair TX Series Features:

    - Ultra-quiet 120mm (140mm on TX750W and TX850W) double ball-bearing fan delivers excellent airflow

    Corsair Advantages

The TX650W/TX750W is packed with latest technology and features:

    - Ultra-quiet 120mm (140mm on TX750W) double ball-bearing fan delivers
excellent airflow at an exceptionally low noise level by varying the RPM in
    response to temperature.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for Corsair - they've had ample time to respond to my posts both here and in the US based forum - too late now! I want a full refund of all moneys paid plus compensation for my costs incurred.

Re: 650TX Fan makes chirping noises

So far I have paid £56.39 for the PSU plus £41.13 to get it back from the supplier, and you suggest I send the unit tothe Netherlands - cost around £25 carriage - making a total of around £122.52. This for a brand new unit purchased two weeks ago!

Instead may I suggest you educate your resellers to understand statements like ...

Statements which you claim several times in your online and published
    literature.

This issue is now being escalated with SCAN and will probably require the services of an independent testing lab here in the UK.

I was hoping for some constructive comments!.

Re: 650TX Fan makes chirping noises

As with any electronic device, there is the possibility of getting a defective unit. This is why we offered without hesitation to replace the unit. Corsair has no control over how SCAN handles their RMA procedures. Since you chose to RMA to them, and not to Corsair, my options are limited.

Also, I cannot see where you have stated you actually used the PSU in a system. Have you actually tested it in a system? It's entirely possible the sound you heard when you hooked it only to a fan was due to an extremely light load. It's very possible that when you have a proper load on the system that the PSU functions normally.

    gussie

I have just come across this thread, regarding the PSU you have purchased from SCAN. I understand the Returns Manager has already been dealing with this, we have tested the PSU and have not been able to confirm any unusual noises as reported.

I will bring this thread to the attention of the Returns Manager tomorrow for you to see if there is anything else we can do for you.

    Best Regards
