High pitched noise coming from Corsair CX600 PSU

Hi, I purchased a new Corsair CX600 PSU from Scan.co.uk a few weeks ago and i've noticed it's making a high pitched noise (like a whining or squealing noise)... Is this something to worry about? I notice the noise more when the PC is switched off (with power still switched on at the mains). When i turn it off at the mains, the squealing noise will continue for about 5 seconds and then fade away.

Do i have a faulty PSU and is it still safe to use?

This is the PSU i bought: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/600w-...-rail-atx-ps-2

I'm quite surprised nobody from Corsair has replied to this yet?

The slight squealing noise only seems to occur when the PC is off... I can't hear it when the PC is running.

Ooops, I apologize for overlooking your post.

What you are describing sounds like 1 of 2 issues.

    1. It could be a capacitor inside the unit making a noise meaning it needs to be replaced.

    2. Another device on the electrical circuit is causing a buzzing noise. Try a different outlet in and also make sure that there is no other device on the circuit.

If it's the PSU, RMA it www.corsair.com

It seems to be quiet at the moment... I've tried looking it up and i've heard about "coil whine". Can this PSU suffer from coil whine? Also, can the wall outlet (mains socket) really cause this noise? It's currently plugged into a surge protected adapter if that makes any difference? My wireless router is also plugged into a mains socket next to the PC's mains socket, and the AC adapter for that is making a faint high-pitched noise too. I wonder if these problems are related?

I have a fairly average PC so i doubt the PSU is getting stressed (see my specs below my username).

Yes it can but "coil whine" occurs when the PSU is powered on and usually under load.

Yes, it can. I am not posting fallacies here. Dirty power in or noisy power in can = dirty/noisy power out.

If you have another device like your router for example on the same line making the same noise, I doubt that your PSU is the cause.

Re: High pitched noise coming from Corsair CX600 PSU

The whining noise is back again!

I unplugged the 24-pin cable from the motherboard and then switched on the PSU and it was silent. I then plugged the 24-Pin cable back into the motherboard and the PSU started to whine/Squeal again... This is with the computer itself switched off (the noise goes away when the PC is running). I've tried different power outlets in the house and it's the same.

I've had this PSU for about a month now, so is it best to RMA it with Scan.co.uk or directly with Corsair? I don't particularly want to pay postage costs to get the PSU sent abroad (most other companies provide a collect and return service or cover pstage costs when the device is still under warranty).

    Any advice is appreciated, Cheers!

The choice to RMA with Scan or with Corsair is entirely up to you. Our RMA link it at www.corsair.com

I'm going to Scan's store tomorrow so they can test it and exchange it. Not sure if i want the same model again though as my brother just received his and it's making the same noise!
