Arc Mini worklog - Project The Arc FINISHED!!! with pics :D

At the moment alot of designs have been thrown about, and after lot's of thoughts i've decided to learn how to use sketchup to plan my design it will be basic but in some ways better than pen and paper XD

So this is the opening of the project! i've deadlined it but unsure if i will reach that!

Onto sketchup it is...should be uploading it later!

    ""Edit""

    The base model....

Now i've not used sketchup before so google was my best friend for the past two hours XD Anyhow the front is not exactly how i want it, there will be more curves, the two "holes" will be more shaped and vent like with mesh behind...it should be mighty fine when done! There is also consideration on a change on the windows....plus do have some mnpctech stock that will make it's way onto this build it should fit the "bill" perfectly!

I'd like to have any thoughts please!!

    Re: Arc Mini Project worklog

Finaly some work has been done it's been pretty basic work but still a good few hours to do. To start with i had to strip the case down, this was easy as the fractal mini is built damn well! I'm used to old battered case's as they were my choice of modding material but i decided it was time to use a decent case and mod it, alot of the design has been properly thought through to make sure every thing works out perfectly first time round. Now onto the modding

To start, it is the front...i pulled the fan from the back of the case aswell to add as a double blowhole is the theme this time round!

Now something i did notice when i placed the second fan in was this...

    There is a gap! problem.

Problem solved! i just removed one hook with my dremel and voila!

For some reason...the fan clicked yes CLICKED perfectly into place...bonus!

So with that comes modding fuel and some more cutting..

    and a quick test fit...

Looks good! so onto the next step...i was throwing away a old shredder...why lets use some of the plastic!

More cutting is needed to shape that,

    Why that is much better

Well as fibreglass weighs abit....this plastic will help with the mold! Perfect.

    Re: Arc Mini Project worklog

Bumping this for some thoughts guys, the side window, what do you think of it? should i do some redesigns?

Plus the front bezel, if anyone has ever heard of defyant they will know he was the man when it came to HP modding with plexi he happened to do something i like, heres a image..

    Linky to post, http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/t...ega-3-case-mod

Defyant is an amazing modder from Australia i believe, either way his work inspired the front bezel idea but ive yet to think about adding it as i still have other thoughts, but the arc mini would support this perfecty

Or i go with the orginal idea of a blowhole with vents slightly higher....so....thoughts comments? roll them in!

Re: Arc Mini worklog - Project The Arc updated!

Time to finally show some work...this is a two part update.

So after sorting through the mass of pictures i had..ive finally come to adding them here! Sorry about the updates going slow guys, im doing 10 hour days atm to earn some extra cash so modding time is slim Anyway,

To start with i had to remove some "mesh" plate from the front of the case,

Next up was to line up some of the plastics,

Once these were in place it was time to break out the hot glue!

Well as all who know, Hot glue can be messy stuff...

    So a sanding should help

....or not XD So on with the update time to add some of the good stuff! (not milk either)

    And some more...

Yay! give it a quick sand to try flatten it and add the second decent full coat..

Looks good, it was getting late and the weather is awefull at the moment so i called it a night! Part two coming in a few..

Re: Arc Mini worklog - Project The Arc updated!

Part two of the update, Smaller but still worth the update, to complement the front i had to think hard about the design for the sides as it will be going on both sides. So with the help of my beautiful assistant....i came up with this!

Yes of course ive already started to cut but oh well, onto getting the next part cut out,

    And to smooth them edges...

And now for a real smoothing

Yes very happy thanks for looking!

    Re: Arc Mini Project worklog

I missed this thread, really sorry razer.

I like the design on the front bezel

Personally speaking I think you should do the window the same pill shape as the front fan hole.
It'll not take up as much of the side panel, but to me that's ok as who wants to look at drive bays anyway.

    Something like this

But make the top and bottom more rounded.

EDIT: you edited while I was posting, yes hot glue gun glue doesn't sand well it's too soft and rubbery.
Epoxy would of been better, as once dry you can sand it, however it's for more complex to work and has far longer drying times (well actually curing times)

    nice I like it

I really don't like just a basic square hole cut in the side.

Don't sell your self short razer, you've got some good control on the rotary tool (shown in your neat cuts) and you're a dab hand with the fiberglass filler (that's one thing I've not attempted yet)

To those thinking about modding, that window cut post shows some very basic but good tips.

1 - Mark out what you're going to cut, you can redraw a line, you cannot change a cut.

2 - Note the way Razer has rough cut the tricky rounded corners, he's not tried to do it all at once.

3 - By cutting out the bulk while leaving the corners roughly under cut, he's given himself more room to work with to get the corners neat, with the bulk of material removed it's much easier to get the tool in at different angles to do the tricky bits.

4 - He's finished it off by smoothing the cut down with a different tool.
Razer what did you use to smooth it off, a Hand file? or sand paper wrapped around something to make a file like tool? or sanding drum?

Re: Arc Mini worklog - Project The Arc updated!

Thanks pob, its always nice to get a complment on my work To answer your question i use a range of small hand files, a flat heat, a curved head and two smaller versions of these aswell. I will show these in the next update and try and give a better picture explanation of what i did.

To anyone reading pobs post everything he has pointed out is pretty much exactly how i did the window, i owe my thanks to bill owen from mnpctech and em3bilko from modders inc to the tips and tricks i learned to cut a window efficently.

Updates to come this weekend, front is coming along nicely again thanks for reading guys, complements and talk is always welcomed and im always happy to answer anyones questions.

Re: Arc Mini worklog - Project The Arc updated!

I've been rather ill of late was worried i was getting what i had last year! (nearly killed me damn it) but i think its just man flu So i did some minor work!

To start i wanted to test how good i was at sleeving with paracord...so out comes some fans

Not bad for a choice....so it starts,

    15ft of the stuff!

Rather beautiful isnt it? So with this i moved onto the more harder parts...

Now if anyone has removed a pci-i pin they will know it is a PAIN i ended up using two staples..

Hard to take a picture with my phone but the camera is not here with me unfortunatly But anyway...

    Oh yes looking rather snazzy!

This was actually alot easier to do!

You see i didnt need to cover the clips with anything (insulation tape) so the paracord just slid right on

So Turns out it looks pretty darn good, dont you think?

I've got to order some more camo effect paracord as this 15ft was not enough! But still im happy with how it has turnt out and will be looking forward to implementing this into the design
