    Re: Performance fans?

I will eventually get four nice, quiet-ish fans for the rad, but these were a bargain as an interim and can be repurposed for the HDD intakes later on.

Do you need four fans the same for push-pull, or do they require different properties/pressures on each side of the rad?

    Re: Performance fans?

One word of caution, don't compare brand numbers for CFM and dBA they are almost worthless.
Thing is there is no standard test for ether and both are highly effected by the environment they are tested in.

This means the same fan could have two different sets of results, generally you can use them to compare the fans from one company against other fans from the same company, under the assumption they use the same testing setup.
However most "brands" don't make their fans so may be running off manufactures numbers, so it's not always accurate ether.

CFM is effected by air pressure and flow restriction, this is often what we mean when we talk about "static pressure" it's the ability of a fan to push air against an opposing pressure.
Basically in open space a fan can just blast air through, but the moment you put something behind the fan you're restricting the air flow, this causes a higher pressure behind the fan to build up which pushes air back against the direction of air flow.
Most CFM tests are done in open space removing any flow restrictions.
Note: pulling has a similar effect sticking things in front of a fan restricts the air coming in, creating a lower pressure pocket in front of the fan, which effectively make the air behind the fan higher pressure.

dBA again is effected by multiple environmental factors, such as the base line noise, a loud sound drowns out a quieter sound because the pressure waves push against each other.
The position of the microphone relative to the noise source also effects it, as does the air pressure of the test chamber.
But one of the biggest things is that sound is subjective, not just in what you might call loud I might call quiet, but also in that different frequencies and types of sounds are more or less noticeable to the human ear.
A pulsed sound is generally more noticeable than a continuous sound at the same frequency.
With two sounds of the same type and level, but at different frequencies, one will sound louder to the other.
dBA tests are "balanced" with different frequencies given different weights and an average total calculated for the final result, but there's no one agreed on dBA weight balance, so you can change the result by changing the balancing used.

Fans are probably the one thing that is the hardest to get good testing and comparisons on, the only thing harder to compare is "looks"

Really does sound like I'll have to try a couple and see how they work out...

    Re: Performance fans?

Yep, that's pretty much been my experience.

PS nice score on a pair NF-P12 fans for £7

My advice is to try them out first before looking at push/pull or replacing other fans.

Same goes for fan layout and speed settings, try a couple of different setups first, then see if you need to change something

I was thinking push-pull would mean each fan pair won't have to work as hard as they would if they were just push or just pull, so would be quieter?

Possible, but air is weird, for example some fans the pull ones will spin a bit faster that creates odd harmonics etc. See how you go with the ones you have, ultimately only you can decide if the lower temps/potentially lower noise is worth the cash.

    Re: Performance fans?

OK, so after some playing around, I have:

    - 2x NF-P12 pulling air up through the H100 rad and exhausting.
    - 1 x NF-S12 exhausting top rear.
    - 2 x Enermax TB Silence 120 PWMs intaking at the front, through the HDD cages.
    - 1 x 200mm CoolerMaster Mega Flow intaking through the side panel.

All this is routed through a Lamptron FC6, with temp probes all over the place.
Interestingly, the Enermaxes are on a 3-pin splitter (Maplin special) but only one side has 3 wires. The other has only red & black, but both fans look to be working fine and I get RPM reported on the FC6.
I tried using the stock LED case fans on the same splitter (and two others), but the LEDs barely light up and only on one fan, as well as no RPM showing even at full chat.

Noise levels are almost as high as before, probably caused more by drawing air through the mesh covers than anything else. I can make all this nice and quiet, but temps are a good 6-10ºC higher than with stock fans on Low setting. On full chat it sounds a bit less like a hairdryer, but again I still got better cooling and quicker responses with stock fans.

I did take a Stanley knife to the stock fan connectors to make them work with the standard FC6 ends, but the seeming lack of control (and rpm reporting) makes them half-redundant.
The FC6 is just an interim solution anyway, as I eventually want an FC5-V3 so I can see what voltages I'm putting into each channel as well.

I thought to exchange the pair of Noctuas for the Enermaxes, drawing air through the rad and exhausting out the top, but the Enermaxes draw air in from the rear and sides, which I believe would reduce the static pressure?
That means the Enermaxes can only push air out *through* the rad - Unless I can latch them to the underside and secure the rad from the top of the case (will have to check what screws I have), they'll be useless in a pull setup.

I'm also reckoning the biggest underlying noisemakers are actually the OCZ 650W PSU and the H100 pump itself.

Seems like whatever my options are, it's a choice between quiet and hot or loud and cool.
I may splash out next pay day and try some Corsair SP/AF fans, Scythes (if I can find them) and perhaps the Akasas too.

SIDE NOTE: The FC6 looks great, works well and the display is great to view from all angles. Colour changing is also a bonus, albeit via jumper.
However, it's very short and does not work with most 'tool-free' bays, it is slightly wonky and there are gaps above & below the unit, meaning the backlight leaks through quite noticibly.
Also, the extension cables are braided, but the sleeve sits over the heatshrink and half mine were fraying apart on arrival!

    Re: Performance fans?

Akasa Venoms were god-awful pieces of ****.
SP120s were insanely loud on full chat.

Ended up with the Noctuas pushing. Think that's about the best I'm gonna get, TBH.
It will do for now, at least until I have much more money!

Thanks all for the help and suggestions!
