Some lovely gear you got there!

Just out of interest, how much did you splash out?

What colour scheme are you going with btw or is there no preferred colour scheme?

Came to about £2500 all in. Ridiculous really, but I happen to have the money right now, and I enjoy building computers.

Colour scheme was originally going to be black and red (i.e. red coolant). But after reading some threads on the pre-mixed coolants (namely, this thread), I got put right off.

So I decided to just used distilled water and pt-nuke. I'll put a couple of red LEDs on the 5.25" bay-reservoir, so it'll seem like red coolant, and I've got some red anti-kink coils to put around the clear tubing, along with black and red cable sleeving. Ideally, I wanted some red tubing, but none was in stock and I couldn't be bothered to wait. It'll still be fairly red and blackish, but since I've got no side window, it doesn't matter too much. I may mod in a side window at a later date, if I've got the courage!

Re: New Project: Water-cooled Corsair 700D i7-980X build!

Incidentally, some of the motivation for this is for World Community Grid number crunching, as well as a gaming + work machine. So, since I had the spare cash, I went for a 980x. With a bit of luck, I should be able to clock it up to 4.5 GHz, and then I'll be getting somewhere in the region of 50-60k WCG points per day, which is about 4 times as many points per day as I get currently on <--- My System (Q6600 build).

Love black and red systems, any chance of some cable braiding too?

    Yup:

Hmm, looking at that makes me realise I should have got black compression fittings rather than silver. Ah well...

I agree with not using any coloured coolant in the loop but have you considered distilled water and a silver coil?

Also the silver compression fittings will look good with the swiftech water block.

I considered and rejected it for galvanic corrosion reasons, although in reality I don't know how valid this reasoning is.

The water loop contains nickel, copper and I think brass as well. This is all reasonable, as the anodic index of these metals ranges from 0.3 to 0.4, which gives me: delta_anodic_index = 0.1. Ideally I believe you want to keep the delta_anodic_index < 0.15 (or <0.25 tops), so I'm all good. However, the anodic index of silver is 0.15, which would then make my delta_anodic_index = 0.25, which is rather on the high side, according to engineering charts such as that one.

Hence, distilled water and PT Nuke it is.

Yes, more or less. Plus I get some quite good monetary compensation for my substantial time spent abroad in Geneva. It's amazing how much money you save when you're too old to go out on the piss every weekend and too young to have kids yet

    Awesome collection of hardware there.

I'd love a system like that but also being too old to go out every weekend like I used to isn't saving me money, because now I spend it all on nappies and toys for the little one
