COMPUTEX 2007: ASUS goes small with solid-state laptop

ASUS says that the Eee PC 701 is at the desktop within just 15 seconds of start-up from a cold boot. With built in WiFi, 10/100 Ethernet and a 56K modem all built in, even though the Eee PC 701 weighs less than a kilo, it’s got all the connectivity you need short of a satellite dish. Heck, it's even got a webcam!

Discover more in this COMPUTEX 2007 Headline.

Very interesting, especially the price tag. It would make a good computer for traveling to avoid the risk of damaging the main (much heavier) one.

$300, your having a laugh by the time we get ripped off it will be more like £500, still I hope I'm wrong as I really want one of these for my a+d course instead of a macbook

    Bob,

Any idea when these will be available to buy? I have a TX3 which will need to be sold in the near future as I'm going to be replacing it with two of these.

Damn fine looking sub-laptop. Shame about the battery life, 3 hours is a bit average considering the LED backlight and solid state drive.

Edit: just thought, by XP-compatable OS are they going to be using winFLP?

And XP is seriously system hungry.

I checked in with ASUS again today and was told that it'll be running a heavily modified, LINUX based OS with full Windows file compatibilty on all major apps.

    Right question time.

Can it run xp?? Driver wise.

Can you upgrade the memory?? another 512mb maybe.

How big is the hdd 3.5" or those tiny things you find in iPods, as I want at least 20gigs in it to be appealing

And yes I'm tempted if its yes to all three of those.

Ok, on the memory question, it comes with 512Mb and you can add another 512Mb yourself.
