Is it worth holding off on a monitor till display port becomes a bit morre widespread? I wrongly assumed that it would be possible to convert DVI-D to displayport....

Some top spec Dell monitors come with DVI, HDMI and Display Port. So if you're willing to splash out I'd highly recommend one of those Dell monitors now. You wont be disappointed. Even my Wii gets a slice of the pie

Of course, it would also be pointless for monitor vendors to integrate it for the same reason, possibly even moreso for them because the extra expense of developing and integrating the interface circuitry would only make for an expensive monitor with nowhere to go. Sometimes you just gotta roll with it. At least GPU AIBs can bundle a DisplayPort->DVI dongle to tide their customers over until DisplayPort monitors show up.

I wouldn't hold off getting a monitor for Display Port, Display Port is backward compatible so if you upgrade your graphics card you can still run a DVI monitor, probably through a dongle, it's also listed as being backward compatible with VGA aswell.
