    Question PS3 80gb=no

A memo to Best Buy employees indicates that Sony may be discontinuing the 80GB model of its PlayStation 3, leaving no backwards-compatible versions of the PS3 on store shelves. According to the memo, Best Buy and some other reatilers will stop selling the $499 PS3 on January 28 — next week. Sony late last year stopped selling the 60GB version of the PS3, the only other version of the console that was backwards-compatible with PlayStation 2 games. This memo only affects North American gamers, as the UK and Japanese markets have already moved to a single-SKU model (the 40GB PS3).

If Sony removes the 80GB PS3 from store shelves and ceases all production of that model, there will no longer be a new-SKU PS3 that plays PS2 games. The 60GB PS3, long since gone at retail, used hardware to enable PS2 games to play on the PS3. The 80GB version, which is apparently on its way out, used software emulation to enable playback for many, but not all, PS2 games. With both versions gone, the question begs to be asked: is Sony working on yet another version/configuration of the PS3 that will support PS2 playback, or is it leaving consumers high and dry with their PS2 game libraries?
apparently... glad I'm not getting one seeing as mgs4 is coming to the 360

    Re: PS3 80gb=no

My wife enquired about the PS2-3 situation at a Sony Store around Xmas. She was told that around Easter, another PS3 config would be released with perhaps a 120GB drive and PS2 compatibility.

tis true, the snake wont be entering microsft domain.....for a long time yet.

Also 95% of people who buy the ps3 have got a ps2
    95% of people who i know who have a ps3 have a ps2 (my figures )
It is a bummer because i know your'd like to play your ps2 games upscailed, which i can because i got a US 60gb, so unless you look for one of them, then i guess your stuck with the ps2. Not too big a deal though, you wanna play ps3 games get a ps3, you wanna play ps2 games get a ps2.

in the same aspect as gta4 has exclusive content over the ps version...

so yet again gtech you've failed to miss the point again.

That may be true but how many of them are going to want to have both connected at the same time? If I have a PS3 connected to my telly and I want to play one of the Ratchet & Clank games do they really think I'm going to crawl around disconnecting the PS3 and connect up the PS2? I only have so much space under my TV. As it is I have a surround sound system, a sky box and a PS2. There isn't room for anything else so it would have to be a case of swapping them out.

TBH the lack of backwards compatibility is the main reason I haven't upgraded. I still enjoy playing a lot of my old PS2 games and there isn't anything on the PS3 yet that makes me willing to give them up.
When GT5 comes out that might change but until then I'll keep my money.

    Re: PS3 80gb=no

as for betty:\ how bigs your tv then:S? i have a 37" and i have a nice glass stand with two shelfs... more than enough for my ps2/freeview/360elite/xbox and soon to be skyHD etc and a wii? my shelfs for a 52" tv but my 37" only just sits on it... maybe you should get a decent tv/stand if you can't have two devices in at the same time lol... thats abit crap.
i have my ps2 and xbox on a composite hd cable switcher so i can run xbox media center at 1080i and my ps2 games through the same cable via progressive scan... if i didn't use that cable i still could have had them both on scart then my 360elite via hdmi and still had the composite spare... i don't see the point your making tbh... your saying just because you don't have space nor a tv capable of multiple inputs that everyone else is the same when infact most people have a lcd these days with a few inputs...

.. you're ranting about someone else not having enough inputs while using a bleedin' SWITCH BOX yourself !
