Casual PS3 games for short gaming periods

    Hey all,

We are getting a PS3 at work for use during break periods. What games would you recommend that can be picked up and played in 30-60 minute sessions? Preferably nothing too in depth that requires multiple hours between saves of course.

There will be many different people playing it so types of games is a little difficult to narrow down, perhaps casual, sports, FPS, racing, platform etc. Any ideas would be appreciated, we can then make up a list and decide what we want. The cheaper the better too (for example, I will be adding Dust 514 because it's free! ).

    Cheers,

    Allen

Will be worth looking at the minis on the Playstation store, also look at the PS1 classics as things like Driver are available on there for very little.

Any old football game, if you get one that lets you play 5/7 a side games they'd probably be more fun in shorter bursts.

    Wipeout / other racing game.

Maybe a shooter, 4 player split screen + bots rather than one player + online. I'm not sure what's out there but if you could go for something more arcade than serious (CoD) it would be more accessible.

Split/shared screen would probably be the best format, wasted many a day with 4 people, Mario-cart and Goldeye on the N64. Plenty of second hand/old games out there to keep costs down.

Joking aside, thoughts on a Wii? A quick game of bowling or tennis once a week with colleagues would keep me happy

If you are looking for something multi-player then you cant go wrong with a fighting game e.g. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition, Mortal Kombat, Injustice.

Re: Casual PS3 games for short gaming periods

It depends if you want multiplayer or single player. (I dont play sports/racing games, so excluded)
I guess CoD: Black Ops 2 (Call of Duty Series) and Battlefield 3 are usually picked for multiplayer (shooters)

For single player, i'm pretty sure most games have frequent checkpoints these days. (Besides Dark Souls)
And most aren't that long (Besides Skyrim/rpg's)
So look at top games lists, you'll probably find GTA IV, Dead Space 1, God of War 3, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Crysis 2/3, Portal 2, Uncharted 2.
(Omitted games that are not really casual eg Metal Gear Solid 4, Bioshock 1/2, Ninja Gaiden 1, LA Noire, Red Dead Redemption, mass effect 2, dragon age 1, assassins creed 1&2, Farcry 3, Skyrim, Dark Souls)

Have fun! Hope I helped. (though you really should play games in the "omitted list", since they are the best and greatest ps3 titles)

    Gran Turismo 5 Prologue

you see.. it's really cheap on Ebay, you won't feel obliged to play it to death having spent loads of money on it, it looks AWESOME, it SOUNDS AWESOME, you CANT modify things so you just have to get better...

    and it's good.

on my projector, on a 7 foot wall, and with 5.1 in DTS it's AWESOME SAUCE.. and it's so cheap it hurts.

Re: Casual PS3 games for short gaming periods

LittleBigPlanet is a good game to play, especially for short sessions. There are thousands of levels (although not all are of a high quality) and users can create more levels. Each level typically doesn't last too long and usually has a separate story so it is ideal for short play sessions. It has support for up to 4 players online or offline and can be got usually for around £5.

If you have playstation+ you can download the sequel for free

Re: Casual PS3 games for short gaming periods

The subscription to playstation plus is getting a definite yes from me like everyone else. You instantly get to own a collection of really great games.
Casual games for short periods are usually any multi player game, since single player games have a story and require time. Multi player shooters and sport games are recommended for sure. I'd agree with a lot of what's written here above.
Pretty sure the most wide-appealing games are the latest FIFA and COD. A typical choice, but mostly everyone likes it, good fun.

Child of Eden is fun and addictive (and borderline psychedelic), not to mention dirt cheap
Hitman games could work, if you play them one mission at a time.
I guess Portal 2 is also a possibility and (I think) allows for coop, as well.
