Noob needs help setting pc on tv

ok ordered the Sony STR-DH520 and 5.1 setup. connected all my devices via HDMI into the Sony Amp/receiver and everything seems ok.. apart from the pc screen is no longer full size by default and not as sharp, very grainy and fuzy. if i unplug the hdmi cable and go straight into the tv it becomes full size again and looks brilliant.

i tried upscanning on the pc which sorts the boarder bit, but the quality is terrible, i cant see any options on my TV to change.

    ^^
i tried all the settings above

when i plug straight into the tv it defaults to 1366x768 and look grand, when i choose that via the sony receiver it still looks crud

I know I'm sort of stating the obvious, but is it essential to have the PC connected via the receiver?

Re: Noob needs help setting pc on tv

I am guessing that what is happening is that your TV has a native resolution of 1366x768....when connected directly the PC reads that from the EDID and negotiates....all is fine.

When you go through the amp, it decides that you have an odd input source and scales the image to 720p/1080i/1080p....this completely screws the 1:1 pixel mapping and the image looks terrible.

If you have the options...you can either turn off video conversion on the amp or turn on a pass-through option.

Failing that you could also use dual monitor outputs and connect one to the TV and one to the amp.....but you need to extend or mirror the desktop onto the "amp" before the audio becomes active.

ok what you say makes sense and is what is happening, the 2nd option is not really there as i would need a new gcard.

so back to the first, can you explain a little more, i really don't know what i'm doing with the amp

You'd have to check the manual for the receiver to see what you can do with it.

Going back to my first post, why don't you just connect the PC directly to the TV? Surely you can output sound via optical to the receiver instead?

i have done that now, but just means i need 3 remotes instead of 2, not really an issue, i just like things to work as they should.

Well, IIRC the old Harmony One was the best, but it's also one of the most expensive. I have the 525 which does the job, but it's not as full-featured as the others. Think I paid £25 or so on here, well worth the money.

There are newer models out now, don't know a whole lot about them. It's a good range though, doubt you'd be disappointed with any of them.

That amp does have a pass.thru option but not sure it's going to do what you want....the manual makes it seem quite restrictive and not once do I see a mention of video conversion
