    QNAP TS269L Build Thread

So I was lucky enough to win this in the recent QNAP competition. 2nd place got me a TS269L Turbo NAS device.

I rarely enter competitions, but I was researching replacing my aging Terastation at the time and I'd been looking at Synology or QNAP. and the rest is fate.

After a delay in shipping, ably assisted by updates from Ferral, Saracen and David the main man, it turned up today. As did the two 4TB drives i ordered from Ebuyer (am i allowed to mention a vendor?).

I realise what follows is probably run of the mill for most readers of this site, but it might help someone and lets be honest, we could all use practice doucmenting stuff.

    Some pics of the unbox...

some drives... theres plenty of docco on the QNAP site to help you work out which drives to buy for it.

She Who Must Be Obeyed got a new toy today, so we're both playing with stuff.

    Ready to Fly.

    Initial Thoughts

Offboard power supply is a bit disappointing at this price point. Other than that, its a nice unit, looks well made, disks slot in nice and its pretty quiet. my keyboard is louder than the unit and its not even housed on the shelves yet. spare screw in the packet is a nice touch.

Next steps, grab the software from start.qnap.com

Install Qfinder. Can't open it as its not from a trusted developer.

So into System Prefs, Security and Privacy, General tab.

Click Allow Anyway and it'll already be running and searching your network for the QNAP. It found mine and asked me if I wanted to configure it. I did, so I clicked to open the webpage in a browser.

I'm gonna go get a brew and start on the configure, so i'll post this now and add to the thread...

    Re: QNAP TS269L Build Thread

    Setup couldnt be much easier...

    1. Admin Password

    2. NTP or Internet Time Source. I set the latter up, I'll probably use this as a time source for a domain of VMs I intend to build this weekend.

    3. IP Address, DNS etc.

    4. What services are you going to run. I'll have all 3 flavours of OS, plus I fully intend to use it for as much as possible of the rest.

    5. Disk Config. This is the important one. I need resilience, as much as you can get from two drives the same, from the same batch, from the same supplier etc etc. So RAID1 it is.

so then it wanders off to format the drives and apply the settings, of which it appears to be 90% of the way through. more later.

Yep. You're not spamming, and you're not advertising a business you have an interest in (I presume). So yup, sure are.

Congrats on the prize, and it's arrival. Happy NASing.
