No threads on TV for mounting TV to stand

Now then, heres one to baffle the mind or at least it has me.

I purchased a Sony Bravia TV around 5-6 years ago, I've never had any problems, with the new year here I decided to have a bit of a change in my room so I went and purchased a new stand with a TV mount on it, I knew my TV had holes and support for such a system so I had no worries making the purchase.

This is where things get really interesting. The circles are the holes which I am meant to put the bolts/screws in. (The bottom with hole has a bolt in that didn't thread also my paint skills suck)

If you can't make it out on the image, the two holes to the left have threads for the screws, however, the two on the right do not.

    They look like this:

Instead they should look like this (these are correct to the left)

I've been on the phone to Sony, they were little help, they may as well of said well what can we do?

I don't have proof of purchase or at least I don't believe I have and I would guess it would be a he said she said type of affair, do I write to Sony?

I was thinking of removing the back of the TV and seeing if the metal arm with the threads on was there, but upon inspection of the hole in comparison the the holes that are intact it looks as though it's been cut off.

I really am lost on what to do here, in effect I seem to have been sold a defective product with regards to been able to mount the TV... I also now have a TV stand which I have opened the box for so maybe unable to return it.

I'm still swaying towards opening it up with a I've got nothing to lose attitude but I paid £1000 for this TV way back then and I now feel as though I've been had, frustrated isn't the word!

Any input/ideas/suggestions would be highly appreciated!

Re: No threads on TV for mounting TV to stand

I'd try fixing a nut on the inside with Araldite or similar, usually M6 or M8 for 200 x 200 and over VESA.

Dependant on the weight of the TV and the casing design, there may be a spreader plate inside to distribute the load over a larger area.

Re: No threads on TV for mounting TV to stand

I'd guess they're captive nuts of some kind, which have potentially come off (its not where the stand mounts is it? did you bring them off when you removed that?) If its 5 years old I'd just be epoxying some nuts in.

Inherently defective from manufacture, as long as theres no signs of you trying to open the casing, you might be able to try using the Sale of Goods Act against them.

I've not mounted anything to it/from it since purchase.

Attaching some nuts to the inside of the back of the TV seems to certainly be an option.

It was purchased on the 26/12/2007 so I think I may fail with that, I'm going to e-mail Currys, I don't have a receipt but I have a copy of the credit agreement it was purchased on.

As much as I want to just get the stand built and get it all done with, I am willing to pursue it as I feel as though I've been slightly conned.

Thanks for the input so far I'll keep this thread updated.

I've got a Sony TV too that looks similar from the back - it does have threads in all of the holes

Re: No threads on TV for mounting TV to stand

For what it's worth I have just e-mailed Currys hoping they maybe able to provide a solution.

Agent, if the back of your TV goes missing don't worry, it's been put to good use

Re: No threads on TV for mounting TV to stand

If you can't get any help from Currys or Sony, you will need to have a look at how the bushes are fitted to the set - remembering that the whole weight of the TV is on those four mounting points.

It could be that the bushes are in place, but not tapped, so your option there might be to get a set of 6m taps and just tap out the holes. If the bushes aren't in place, you are going to need another solution, but make sure that the weight is taken by a suitable strong point in the set.

Re: No threads on TV for mounting TV to stand

Thanks for the idea, this is an image I got from the service manual:

I have a friend who maybe able to put something together to match the other arm, as it seems from the image that is what holds the TV to the mount. For now though I'll wait to hear what the verdict is.

Re: No threads on TV for mounting TV to stand

So are both arms there? It seems unlikely that one was omitted completely, but it is possible that one wasn't manufactured correctly. You might be able to get a replacement from Sony.

I've not opened it yet so I am unsure I'm going to wait for Currys to get back to me, I'd like to think it's possible to get a replacement if it came to that.

Re: No threads on TV for mounting TV to stand

I had some communication with Currys, as expected they told me to speak to Sony as it is so long ago since the purchase, for what it's worth Currys email support is about as fast as a snail.

So I've decided to have a look for myself, it wasn't much of an issue getting the back of the TV off.

This is the TV with the back off, as you can see there are two brackets.

This is the bracket which has the threads.

This is the bracket that doesn't.

I got the two arms off, if you can see the bracket to the left has metal bits (I don't know the terminology) for the screws to go in to, but the bracket on the right doesn't it just looks like a manufacturing error.

It looks like a simple-ish fix, although I'm not 100% sure on what to use. Any input would be great.

I am going to e-mail everything to Sony, see what they say.

Re: No threads on TV for mounting TV to stand

They look like threaded bushes - they might be riveted, pressed or welded into the bracket - riveting is most likely. As you say, it looks like a manufacturing defect. Provided they are still in production, or available as spares, Sony should be able to supply a replacement (I would hope Foc!) Otherwise you are looking at getting a nut braised onto the bracket (I'm not sure I'd trust araldite in that application - you would probably be OK but why risk it?)

Otherwise you are looking at something like this

    http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/rivets/7689966/

    or these

    http://uk.rs-online.com/web/c/?searc...es&sra=oss&r=t

These are matched to the thickness of the sheet metal they are being riveted too.

There is a snag in that they are available from RS in quantities of 100 (but you might find them elsewhere in smaller quantities). You also need to ensure that the dimensions are correct for the hole drilled in your bracket.

You might consider these self-clinching nuts - again check the fixing dimensions carefully.

Re: No threads on TV for mounting TV to stand

I've just had a quick look for some rivets, the dimensions seem about 1mm wider (but from what I gather with rivets that's how they work, it needs to be a bit tights?) The only difference is the rivets are a little longer but that won't have an effect.

I think my dad may have the necessary tools at work to do it.

I'll probably just give that a shot whilst I wait, I don't mind spending £8 if it works.

I'm really thankful for the help peterb, I wouldn't of had a clue what to search for, you learn something new every day!
