    Custom electronic thingamajig?

    Heya,

Apologies if this is the wrong section, but I couldn't find anywhere that seemed appropriate...

I'm looking for something like a Sinewinder/Cylon LED strip, where the lights move in patterns:

I know the circuit type exists as I've seen them in little units for cyclists and the like. However, I'm after something that fits within my own design... and powered by a Molex or 5-pin SATA socket.
I'll need custom dimensions, I expect, with a couple of controls to alter the light pattern, speed and probably a basic on/off.

I'm utterly clueless and cack-handed when it comes to electronics and soldering, so does anyone know somewhere/someone UK-based that could make this for me for a fairly sensible price?

    Cheers,
    Tasky.

That would be trivial with an arduino (or cheap compatible). Code is all online, and would take about ten minutes to solder up.

I need someone to do the making as well. I don't have the fine motor control for soldering.

    Re: Custom electronic thingamajig?

depending on the packaging etc you need, its perfectly possible to do it all with jumper cables, screw terminals and an off the shelf power adaptor.
Something like this http://shop.pimoroni.com/products/ad...x#.UuetatLFI1I basically plugs directly into an arduino compatible board and gives you a 5*8 RGB led matrix to play with.
Or something like the screw shield (http://wingshieldindustries.com/products/screwshield/) gets you screw terminals you could use to mount LEDS using something like these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/27105...ff14=95&ff19=0

Even though that would be more expensive than direct soldering, its still going to be loads cheaper than paying someone to do it. It will also teach you a bit about programming (if you don't know it) and you could do cool stuff like having the speed/brightness vary with temperature etc.

    Re: Custom electronic thingamajig?

The Arduino thing sounds cool, but perhaps a bit beyond my abilities - I'd have trouble even picking up an LED!!

I basically need a bar of LEDs about 220mm long, 30mm high, with 20-22 LEDs on it. Can be up to 60mm deep, but the first two are pretty much the absolute limit.
The switches/controls and any chips it might need can sit on a separate secondary PCB, if needs be and I'm thinking that'd work better, in fact.
Power from a Molex or SATA cable, as it's going in a PC.

The light on my Crucial Ballistix RAM do the same sort of patterns and also switch colours. I just need something similar in the above dimensions.
