Western Digital TV Live now Chromecast compatible

I've just recently updated the firmware on my WDTV Live box, & I noticed that amongst the changes, the unit now supports 'Miracast'. What I didn't notice until today is that it's also now 'Chromecast' compatible - you can play video from Youtube for example, simply by selecting the WDTV from the available devices after clicking the Chromecast button. Very nifty!

Re: Western Digital TV Live now Chromecast compatible

Hmmm will have to look look into this, but on the surface it sounds like this will be of no benefit to me as I dont have a Chromecast and in the example you give well I would just use the Youtube app already on the device.

Must say though I am liking the new update as the ability to add favourite folders and apps to your shortcut panel is good, as is the ability now for it to go straight to your favorite folder on startup rather than going to the main menu.

You don't need a Chromecast adapter - the WDTV Live basically behaves just like a Chromecast adapter itself. The example of using it with Youtube wasn't the best example perhaps, since the WDTV Live already has a Youtube app, as you point out. But using Chromecast you can play video from any web page displayed within the Chrome web browser. So for example, you could play video from 4OD or ITV Player, neither of which are supported by apps on the WDTV Live.

OK so that's now suddenly got more interesting and means I can move the nowTV box out of the lounge and into the boys Playroom! While we still WDTV in the lounge but with full access to catchup services which we'd loose if I decide to ditch Sky. Thanks!!

I will add the caveat that I think it's fully Chromecast compatible - I do have a Chromecast adapter that I use in another room, so I assume you can cast to the WDTV without having to own a Chromecast adapter. I assume you just install the Chromecast extension in Chrome, & it'll detect your WDTV (mine just appeared in the list of available devices).

Re: Western Digital TV Live now Chromecast compatible

The WD Live box is £23 at the moment in Currys/PC World...

I've found as well that I can cast to my Virgin Tivo since I attached it to the network...

Is it? I looked on their websites & all they've got is the 'Western Digital Smart Player' for £89.99. If it's only £23, that's a bit of a bargain...I paid £55 from John Lewis, I think.

Useful info about the Virgin Tivo box - I don't have Virgin myself, but my sister & brother-in-law do, I'll have to let them know

Whats the quality like with these? My limited understanding is they stream via WiFi so surely they are bandwidth limited? Can't see them streaming 1080p vc1 blu ray quality without issues??
    Cheers for any info.

Depends what actual model you're talking about. The WDTV Live as seen here:

    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1270

Has wifi and ethernet connectivity and the quality is excellent, firmware is a bit glitchy sometimes but generally the support is good.

There is a cheaper version that is wi-fi only believe but I cant find the correct name for it.

Re: Western Digital TV Live now Chromecast compatible

Yes it is, according to the WDTV manual:

    HDMI CEC
Use this menu to set HDMI CEC to ON (OFF is set by default).
The CEC function allows HDMI devices to control each other when necessary,
allowing you to operate multiple devices with a single remote control for one of the
devices. By turning HDMI CEC ON, you can:
„ Press the power button on the WD TV or other HDMI CEC device remote
controller to power on or off both the media player and your HDTV or other
devices. „ Press FF/REV, Play/Pause, Navigation, OK, Mute, and numeric keys on the WD
TV or other HDMI CEC device remote controller to control multiple devices. „ Press the 1 or 2 buttons on the WD TV or other HDMI CEC device remote
controller to control TV volume. Press 1 to increase volume and press 2 to lower
    volume.
