Effective from March 15, 2016, NOOK will no longer sell digital content in the United Kingdom. The NOOK Store on NOOK devices sold in the UK, on the UK NOOK Reading App for Android, and at nook.com/gb will cease operation.

To meet your digital reading needs going forward, NOOK has partnered with award-winning Sainsbury’s Entertainment on Demand to ensure that you have continued access to the vast majority of your purchased NOOK Books at no new cost to you. Further instructions on how to transfer your NOOK Books to a new or existing Sainsbury’s Entertainment on Demand account will be sent to you by email over the coming weeks. Please ensure that you look out for these emails as they will contain important information on what to do next.

Your action is required. Visit our FAQs page.

We thank you for your patronage and are working closely with Sainsbury’s to make this transition as smooth as possible.

    Sincerely,

    The NOOK Team

I got that too, not a huge surprise.

My books might transfer over to Sainsburys, but sounds from the "cease operation" like I won't be able to download stuff onto the old nook reader? Well, perhaps unless I hack it. Still, it cost me peanuts and I have had enough use out of that reader that the buttons are going, so I think I'm OK with this.

From reading the FAQ, it looks like :-

    - IF you tfr to Sainsbury, MOST books will be redownloadable from there
    - Mag and newspaper backtitles won't tfr, so you lose those
    - You can still add format-compatible material from PC, USB etc

    Also, not from FAQ

    - As I carry a lot of proprietary stuff on my Kindle, I use Calibre to sideload. It's easy
    - Calibre is great, and free
    - Calibre is capable of a wide range of cross-format conversions.

I don't know, but doubt, if Calibre will convert copy-protected titles, but knowing the net, I'd be astonished if it couldn't be done, or was hard to find out how. Even if I knew, I couldn't tell you here as our rules don't allow it. And that, by the way, is a hint not to for anybody else thinking of doing so.

it's a shame, but I can't moan too much, having had Kindles through three generations. I did look hard at Nook, but in the end, Kindle won out for me.

Re: Nook pull out of UK

I got both Nook and Kindle apps on my phone.

B&N's Nook required a complicated sign-up and got stuck in several authentication loops, before letting me browse the shop... only to deny my attempted purchasing of both free and paid content, because I was in the UK... even though they had me tell them which country I was in during setup... plus a load more silliness and nonsense that led to me just uninstalling and swearing a lot.

Kindle had me log-in and then synced, before downloading all my books in less than ten minutes and has worked awesomely ever since.
