Personally I would get a 2nd small consumer unit and run it separate from the the main unit, I left space in mine for the garage but the in law who is a sparky suggested a 2nd small unit. I also never went for a split unit as I run RCBO's instead.

In my limited electrical experience in the dosmetic environment it's obvious overload could potentially be an issue but I'd agree the earth leakage is most likely and coincidentally is very similar to the issue I've had recently.

peterb has given good information; from the symptoms described I'd suspect earth leakage and not over current, and it would be useful to follow up on the suggestion of isolating the cooker & ground floor circuits and testing that the problem still exists.
Oh this is totally one for MCCBs helping identify the culprit ring.
I'm also slightly concerned about any sparkie worth their salt who has a vacuum which trips circuits and he doesn't find this an issue, something he needs to fix. That's a bit of a red flag.

So.... the sparky came back yesterday and moved the man cave onto its own RCD. He reckons it could have been just a sensitive RCD or maybe inrush power when I power up a load of stuff at once.
Anyway, seem to be working fine now so fingers crossed it all stays stable :-).
Thanks everyone for the help....
I didn't, he was contracted through the building company. Bit of a ballache, but it's all good now.
There is a 2nd consumer unit in the man cave, so maybe he thought that was sufficient. TBH I don't know enough to contradict him.
