Right, it's that time again. Who has a good quiet dishwasher that dries stuff properly? I've been looking online and even Which gives best-buy ratings to machines that lots of people say don't dry properly.

I have a Bosch that dries stuff, provided you leave the door closed for about 30 minutes st the end of the cycle, or open it immediately and leave it for five minutes or so. If you live in a hard water area it is essential to keep the machine topped up with salt so the built in water softener works properly, and the rinse aid disease must be correct - too little and it won't dry very well, too much and you get streaks. If you have items with domes in the bottom, you will get water left in those. Just use a tea towel or paper towel to soak up the excess before you empty the machine.

Mine doesn't have a drying cycle but, when it finishes washing, I open the door and pull out the top tray a couple of inches to stop the door shutting completely. The escaping heat pretty much draws all the moisture out and leaves everything dry.

which Bosch do you have PeterB? We were looking at this one, but slightly alarmed at the manual stating you should check the wash filters after every wash - which seems a very labour intensive task for a modern appliance.

seriously, check out page 26 of the manual:

The filter system consists of a coarse
filter, a flat fine filter and a microfilter.
1.
After each washing cycle check the
filters for residue.
2.
Unscrew filter cylinder as illustrated
and take out filter system.
3.
Remove any residue and clean filters
under running water.
4.
Re-install filter system in reverse
sequence and ensure that the arrow
marks are opposite each other after
closing the filter system

I don't check after every wash, but it only takes a few seconds to take the filters out and inspect them. The arrangement in the link you provided is the same as mine. Although it is a different model, the internal fittings look the same.

If they need rinsing that takes a minute or so, so not onerous. I think you'll find that most dusswashers have a similar system of filters.

Having read a number of manuals today it's only bosch who say clean it after every wash. Miele say to check theirs periodically inspect every 4-6 months. Which is what we would expect. I think we had to do anything with our last one 2 times in 2 years.

I'll be watching recommendations with interest, though. I may give in and get one. I did buy a machine once, but it arrived damaged and ended up going back. Funnily enough, it was Bosch which, I was reliably assured, was a badged Hotpoint. It was about 30 years ago, though, so that's probably changed.

There is a lot of similarity between Bosch and Siemens these days - same parts for spares etc and incredibly similar looking machines on some models. Not sure how they relate to hotpoint. Having checked our old dishwasher manual (a Siemens) it too says to clean the filter after every wash. Same diagrams and text verbatim. So I think we can conclude it usually isn't necessary and is likely covering one's backside in the warranty dept somewhere.
