Modded Corsair H70 as a GPU Cooler

Our very own Jake Crimmins has modded an H70 and fitted it to an Nvidia GeForce 480 GTX replacing the stock GPU cooler. Read about the astonishing results HERE.

Impressive. Not as good as an EK waterblock, but a much simpler operation and so much easier to install than building your own custom loop. A hell of a lot cheaper too!

Re: Modded Corsair H70 as a GPU Cooler

Now that is really interesting. We were talking about this as a mod a couple of weeks ago. IIRC the consensus was that the GPU drew too much power when compared to a CPU for this to work. Seems we were wrong...

The bad news is that this wouldn't be useful in CF mode unless you have widely seperated slots due to the height of the pump/contact unit.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Just goes to show that the H70 is a good bit of kit but also that both nVidia and ATi need to really work harder on their stock cooling, its been pretty poor for a number of years now.

Wow, didn't know that was possible, looks like there might be a new demand for these kits now.

Any chance of an official bracket kit (maybe for a selection of cards) for those of us who are "lacking" in dremel skills?
I would happily pay extra for one.

Re: Modded Corsair H70 as a GPU Cooler

i would not do that to any card that needs good airflow over the rest of the heatsink like the 480 does unless you have a fan pointing right at it with good airflow or butcher the shroud back on.

Re: Modded Corsair H70 as a GPU Cooler

Looks like the blower is still on and working, however I do agree you should some how butcher the shroud and get it back on as blowers need the shroud to work well or replace the blower with an actual fan.

Just wondering if the H60 would be a better option as I don't think the block/pump sticks up as much.

Be really nice if you could buy a mount so you could do this yourself. I love my GTX 480, but hate the noise.

Get a 3rd party cooler. Problem solved.

for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Brilliant work but like others have said, putting the shroud back on or creating your own would be a good idea!

    Good job though! (thumb)
