third party cooler for i7-4790K for ocing

Does anybody have any suggestions on a cooler that I could use for oc'ing a 4790K. Im going to order with stock for the moment, but will need to get something to cool it on air.

depends if your case can fit the above coolers and whether you need decent ram clearance as well.

Are you specifically looking for an air cooler? There are tons of AIO liquid coolers out there to choose from.

Noctua D14 is one of the best on air or the newer D15 if it will fit.

On this note, I hope a D14 will be enough to OC a 4790K to 4.6GHz stable. I think it should be, and I'm not missing out by not buying a more expensive cooler, as the chip seems quite stubborn and disappointing in the overclocking aspect.

My recommendation is the H80i. My oc'd 4670 doesn't go over 50c even with high voltage and clocks.

How quiet is that though? I've heard that the stock fans are fairly loud

Some do claim that the stock fans are a bit on the loud side when running at a higher rpm, but others do say they are fairly acceptable when running between 1900 and 2200. I guess it all depends who the observer is. Since noise level is very subjective, the tolerance for noise will pretty much vary from one person to another. At any rate, you can always use Corsair Link to tone down the noise to a level that you are comfortable with.

Ultimately, if the stock fans noise level doesn't cut it on any of the rpm level, you can always get 3rd party fans to replace the stock ones.

I would run them slower but I still want the performance that the h80i delivers, I'd probably replace them with the sp120s. Does the h80i allow for 140mm fans?

By default, the rad will only support 120mm fans. But you can always get an adapter to fit a 140mm fan.

SP120s Quiet edition would be an alternative..
