Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
Am I doing something wrong? I disabled TurboCore, and upped the voltage to 1.400 (as I usually do) and just raise the multiplier. I don't mess with FSB.
Overclocking somehow seems to be worse on this motherboard. I only have 2 cores enabled, and I can't even get past 4.5 Ghz raising the multiplier. It will not start if I apply this in the BIOS or it just decides to freeze at Windows.
I thought it was me, so I used TurboV Evo to see if ASUS tool can automatically overclock it, it ups the FSB and multiplier, upon freezing it sets the frequency to 4.05 Ghz (for all 6 cores). For only 2 cores it won't get past 3.5 Ghz.
I am doing the same thing as I did on my last board.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
Maybe the new motherboard is putting less volts into the cpu. If it has more phases on the vrm then that makes it more precise (the voltage is more constant) but that isn't the same as accurate (the voltage is what you expect).
Maybe the old board was putting out too many volts, maybe the new one is slightly low, perhaps a bit of both.
Only explanation I can think of anyway.
OTOH, the 2 core result is just odd...
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
You might be suffering from vdroop on the cpu voltage rails. My old asus mb suffered like that and wouldnt let me overclock as much as my nice new crosshair 5 does.
Just give it a touch more volts like 1.4125 and see if that helps.
@biscuit does your chip run on a am2+ board as I have haad a ddr2 mb returned to me as faulty and I need a chip to test it out?

Possibly, i dont think i have ever tried it or have anything to try it with. Its a Athlon II 240 i think?
Il try and remember to dig it out tonight :)
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
With the comments above about vdroop - it's the voltage in CPU-Z/hwmonitor etc that you need to watch. Providing that doesn't get too high then take what it says in the bios with a pinch of salt.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
Well it comes with a feature called DIGI + VRM, and a very good utility called AI Suite II. Apparently it automatically adjusts voltage.
There is these features:
UEFI BIOS
Auto Tuning
TPU
EPU
DIGI+VRM
CPU Load Line Calibration
CPU/NB Load Line Calibration
CPU Phase Control
CPU Power Duty Control
VRM Frequency Control (Fixed frequency or spread spectrum).
With a nice explanation next to them.
My motherboard has a better chipset (970), 8-pin CPU power (instead of my previous 4), 6+2 (digi) VRM.
Maybe the features above need a bit of adjusting? Because there is a bar to slide across, and it shows power saving/performance?
I have power saving mode, normal mode, fast mode, and extreme or manual on every option. Maybe this motherboard has a lot more advanced features to adjust than my last one :P
P.S the BIOS is very good, its got a GUI for easy navigation. A heck of a lot of features for me anyway. Maybe it isn't as easy as push and pull and hey you've got a faster CPU. Must be something stopping a higher frequency.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
Do you remember how hot the CPU got on the last motherboard? That might indicate if/how the voltage has changed.
(this discussion might be better in its own thread).

i found it and it is indeed a 250, also have the stock HSF. Do you want to buy or borrow it?
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
The CPU idles at around 13, same as my last motherboard (my house is cold :P). But on load it never goes above 40. Pretty much the same temperatures.
The motherboard temp is cooler also.
I have opened new thread too thanks :D
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
Software doesn't display AMD CPU temps since Thuban correctly (about a 10-15C offset), I'm not sure if there's a better way yet but CPU socket temp is a better one to look at than core temp.

Do you want to take this to PM to keep this thread as much on topic as possible?

on the picture is the left chip desktop and the right one mobile?

Both are mobile versions - the smaller one is the one for thin and light laptops AFAIK.
It seems Steamroller based CPUs might be AM3+ too:

Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
I would expect Steamroller to use a new socket, possibly DDR4?
