Celeron and Pentium G620 - Will onboard graphics work with linux?

Can anybody confirm if these two onboard CPU graphics will work with linux (mint) or do I need to buy a descret graphics card?

Intel Pentium G620 2.6GHz Socket 1155 3MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor - Intel HD Graphics
Intel Celeron G530 2.40GHz Socket 1155 2MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor - Intel HD Graphics

Want to build a cheap web browsing and word processing machine thinking of using with this motherboard:
MSI H61M-P25 (B3) Socket 1155 VGA DVI 8 Channel Audio mATX Motherboard

    thanks in advance!

Not tried, but I must say historically every time I have tried to use a corporate Linux PC with onboard Intel graphics, I have ended up paying the 20 quid for a low end Nvidia card out of my own pocket. Makes the machine smoother and way more stable.

Nvidia 8200 cards used to be the staple for low end Linux, though my previous work machine had a 9500GT so I could use the wobbly windows effects and dual monitors

Re: Celeron and Pentium G620 - Will onboard graphics work with linux?

I can confirm that current Linux builds work well with SandyBridge CPUs.
I remember trying Ubuntu 11.04 which was a poor experience, although various driver releases came out to fudge it.
Eventually since 11.10 it worked smoothly, and since Mint is derived from Ubuntu you'll be fine.

Edit: Sorry, i probably didnt explain myself fully above. Not only do Linux distros work with the CPUs (naturally), but as at Ubuntu 11.10 they work great with the onboard graphics too.
    That's what I meant.

thanks for the replies, will look into getting an intel system!

shaithis - thanks for the suggestion of a llano - I'm leaning torwards intel as the cpu is benchmarked higher and its cheaper!

    cheers

Re: Celeron and Pentium G620 - Will onboard graphics work with linux?

For web browsing and word processing an Atom would be more than sufficient CPU power - for those uses CPU benchmarks are pretty much irrelevant. Given that a lot of web stuff is flash, much of which can be GPU accelerated (at least it can on Windows, I assume it can on Linux?), you may find that the more powerful GPU in a llano chip is more important than the (marginally) more powerful CPU in a low-end sandy bridge. Plus AMDs graphics drivers are generally much better than Intels.

That said, either option would be fine, but perhaps it'd be worth considering a ready-built nettop instead? This Acer Revo is only £180, runs linux, employs an E-series APU and will fit the bill perfectly...

Re: Celeron and Pentium G620 - Will onboard graphics work with linux?

If you get the Intel CPU, just make sure it is possible to add discrete graphics in future even if you don't start off with it.
Let us know if you can turn on the open-gl rendered desktop yet without getting the machine seizing up several times a week to the point it requires the reset button. If Intel can get it to not suck that much then they have come on a long way in the last year or so since I used their Linux drivers.
