    Intel "Haswell"

Is there any information available yet as to the number of pins the upcoming Haswell processors will be using, or their compatibility on current socket 1155 motherboards? I was just looking for information and it seems that it may well be based on a new socket 1150? can anyone please shed any light on release dates and what we are expecting.

    thanks

It needs a new socket and the quad core versions will be released in Q2 2013 AFAIK,with the dual core versions probably being released later.

There is a wiki on it here - hxxp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haswell_%28microarchitecture%29 (change the xx to tt) and there are duals coming straight off the bat. The socket is a new one. And they are basically a more refined version of the Ivybridge processors.

I thought haswell was a new arc, like SB was to nehalem?

Yes it is, but I still wouldn't expect any huge performance gains.

Or just stick to sandy bridge. It's fast on it's own.

    Re: Intel "Haswell"

End of June we'll probably see Haswell hitting shelves and they are in production in the moment.

I'd be interested in seeing how much of a performance gain Haswell will be over SB and IB. It terms of the mobile space Haswell seems to be a revelation given it's lower power consumption and improved iGPU performance. Not sure what this means for the desktop market though.

    Re: Intel "Haswell"

    No big surprises.

I think Intel did such a good job with the early i7s (920 for example), that most people still won't see a reason to upgrade with Haswell.

    Re: Intel "Haswell"

Still an incremental increase for the relatively lightweight (by which I mean, small die space, quad core type) chips. Relatively low cache sizes probably help the bottom line as well.

The multi-threading tests show a gap where AMD could provide a good alternative, but I guess at higher cost to themselves with old technology at the moment.

    Re: Intel "Haswell"

I can't understand why Intel are leaving the socket 2011 a generation behind. We get Haswell this year and Ivy Bridge finally makes it to socket 2011. When will socket 2011 catch up? And yet when they released Nehalem it was the "full fat" version first with the "semi-skimmed" version following on later.

Agreed. It's weird releasing the extremes of the 'old' architecture as they release the new one. They advertise all the advantages of the new Haswell chip, yet at the same time release more powerful versions of what will be the 'older' chip. I went for a 3770K, instead of a Sandy-Bridge-E due to cost and because I didn't need the excess cores, but even if I had all the money in the world, I would have found it strange choosing the older architectures over the latest ones.
