Re: Face palm - CPU without a heatsink

I ran an i3 using a Thors Hammer passive heatsink. It got a bit warm but nothing to be concerned about. One I got an i5 the temps started going over 100 so I had to move to water cooling. The point is that passive cooling with the right CPU is entirely possible. Without the heatsink entirely is another matter though I look forward to seeing Bonebreakers results

Re: Face palm - CPU without a heatsink

I am using Thor's Hammer on a i5 plus 3 x case FANs on the lowest settings and even under long term load the temps don't crawl over 60 degrees.

EDIT: looks like I been presented with a challenge

The Duron was protected by a temperature sensor on the motherboard touching the underside of the CPU, so good enough to detect fan fail but nothing else.

At the time of that video people were putting heatsinks on their boards that were too heavy for the lugs, and you just know when the lugs are going to decide to fail A 1kg lump of copper dropping onto your graphics card doesn't seem to do it much good either.

    I remember them!

Concentrated copper blocks with copper fins, surprisingly heavy and not that much better that copper-aluminium hybrids.

My good old Abit MoBo had a heat sensor too far from the CPU (touching the MoBo instead) and for a while I had amazing temperatures but yet I had to regularly open up the case to cool down

Should be fine, most cpus have protection features
