    Haswell vs Ivy Bridge?

I'm looking at replacing a mobo which just died and was looking at grabbing an i5 Haswell. However, I recently came across a few articles stating that Haswell offered no great advantages over Ivy Bridge and in fact suffered from hotter running temps etc.

Now, I should specify, I'm not looking to overclock and this won't be a gaming rig specifically. It'll mostly be a home/multi-media PC maye with a little gaming chucked in when possible.

Anyone offer any insight/recommendations, especially for best bang for the buck?

    I had been looking at the i5 4690K retail. Maybe with a Gigabyte GA-Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 or Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 Intel Z97.

    Cheers.

    Re: Haswell vs Ivy Bridge?

If I was buying something I would go for Haswell out of the two.

If I already had an Ivy Bridge, then I think Haswell would be a waste of money.

    Re: Haswell vs Ivy Bridge?

Temps aren't brilliant with Haswell, but you don't need to worry at all if you're not overclocking. Just make sure you have a semi decent cooler for it as the Intel one is not really fit for the job. My 4790k usually reaches around 58c when gaming and hits around 74c when running torture tests (I've not run these tests for long periods of time as they're pretty much pointless). I'm not using an expensive cooler either, just a £30 Alpenföhn Matterhorn Pure along with adequate airflow in the case .

My other PC is running an Ivy 3770k and it's slightly warmer, but it's also using a cheaper cooler (Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2).

The price differene on scan isn't that big considering they have a deal on right now. Scan have a 3570K for £166 whereas the 4690K is £177.

There are offers for combining the CPU with a mobo for:

    4690K with Gigabyte GA-Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 - £227
    4690K with Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 Intel Z97 - £258

    Alternatively:

    3570K with a Gigabyte GA-H61M-USB3V = £203
    3570K with an ASRock H61PROBTC = £206

If you're buying from new, I wouldn't look at Ivybridge - socket 1155 is essentially a dead-end at this point. I think Broadwell is due to support socket 1150, so at least if you go with Haswell you've got at least one more processor generation to choose from in the future.

I'd say buy the latest gen tech you can get.

I think Haswell-E is not as ridiculously hot as the Haswell tho.

If you can hang on until February (or whenever Broadwell's supposed to be coming) then I'd use a laptop or something until then. If not, Get a Z97 board and a cheap CPU, like a Pentium K (and a deepcool lucifer for overclocking). If you find that's not adequate for your gaming needs, move on to a Broadwell i5.

id go with haswell due to the power saving. Otherwise its a bit of a waste

    Re: Haswell vs Ivy Bridge?

I've recently bought a i5-4690k and frankly I saw a substantial change from technology ivy bridge, also haswell the speed / consumption is higher than ivy bridge. I paired with a asrock Z97 pro4, 32gb ram crucial in 1600 and I must say that I can not complain! Then it's up to you to decide!

    Re: Haswell vs Ivy Bridge?

Is Broadwell even coming to PCs? When I looked at the Intel road map I perceived it as though Skylake was the next architecture for desktops. I may have to look again and edit the post.

Either way though, may as well go Haswell as it's newer and chipset offers some beneficial storage features (Z97)

Edit - couldn't find the picture I was thinking of. Mentioned that Broadwell 'will be great for convertibles and tablets' or something.

Broadwell is already here - it's used in the Core M processors that have been incorporated into some laptops. It's due to be released in desktop form sometime next year (Q2 for the K variety, I think). Skylake is also due for release next year, but there's no word on unlocked desktop versions.

My haswell i5 4670k ran OK with the Intel heatsink for a while until I got a decent replacement. I just wouldnt run any stress testing, prime95 etc, on it but it did for games and run of the mill use without getting too hot.

For what its worth I have a mid range haswell i5 on stock intel fan but Noctua thermal paste. Not experienced overheating in gaming at all. I'm really happy with its performance paired with a 770. Fan never gets loud either.

    Re: Haswell vs Ivy Bridge?

I'm thinking of upgrading my HTPC, probably around August. At the moment I'm running an AMD 6400K in a mini-ITX board and would like the extra computing power of the i5.

I'd also been contemplating Ivy Bridge over Haswell as I'm not gaming with it and don't see the point in spending loads.

I'd like something with 65W TDP or under as I'm powering the rig with a solid state PSU (90W, I think).

Anyway, I've been looking at the 4590S vs the 4690S and I think I'll go Haswell due to socket 1150. I think they're both essentially the same chip but with the 4690S being clocked slightly higher I'm tempted to go for that. If I'm spending around £200 for a mobo/CPU I might as well pay an extra £10 to £15 for the slightly faster chip.

    Would others agree with this?
