Right for me.
Gaming = i5
High end applications = FX 8 core or i7
General use/HTPC = AMD APU.
At the top, i5 makes most sense for gaming, little to gain with i7, throw what is saved at the gpu.
Then I think of video editing in my case to which currently I would get an AMD 8 core due to the value they offer, as it is I do currently do video editing on my i5 as my machine is an editor and gaming machine.
As said general use PCs to me make most sense with AMD APUs, I think they are much better on balance, yes the cores are a little slow but the GPU grunt is rather good to which in many cases the CPU speed difference won't be noticeable but GPU bottlenecks are.
Of course the AMD zen processors may change things as will directx 12.
I agree, I5 is suited more for gaming whereas Intel is suited for more high end demanding programs
