Re: recomendation for thermal compound
Wow thanks for the responses I found the stuff I had originally and it wasn't artic silver it was thermal take tg-2 which I'm assuming is bad because its not on the graph. I can't seem to find the phobya stuff anywhere on scan but I will start searching other places.
Re: recomendation for thermal compound
You need to read the conclusions to the tests, there are some caveats with regard to the liquid metal based compounds

Re: recomendation for thermal compound
MX-4 here on my GPU and my CPU. Good stuff, good price. Non-conductive, so pretty safe to work with, apply and manipulate. Used cheapo's in the paste in the past. Performance was so-so, but dried up in use becoming even worse.
Even you're serious about getting every last hz out of your CPU then yeah, get

I'm running i7 3960x with h100i and mx-4, OC of 4.6ghz and temps are nice and low, barely touching 55c in games
Re: recomendation for thermal compound
Few weeks back got another i5 4690K, this chip has turned out to be a corker! :)
Relevancy to this thread? still using my age old AS5 tube with an Archon SB-E X2 ;) .
Here is 54 loops (9hrs) of X264 stability test, CPU 4.8GHz @ 1.210v, Cache 4.1GHz @ 1.10v, XMP 2400MHz 1T CL11.

Have done some tests at 5.0GHz & 4.9GHz but won't post screenshots yet as not passed my OC QA testing! :p.

Sorry but I only use diglyceride germanium ball compound applied with a brush made from hamster pubes.
Hamster pubes? That is so yesterday, nothing less than gnats whiskers to shave that extra 0.001 degree C off my liquid helium cooled GPU. :)
Re: recomendation for thermal compound
I been using MX 3 for long time and I thought its really good but then I start using collaborator liquid pro and it is just way better especially if your heatsink is scrath that's why it's my first choice.
Re: recomendation for thermal compound
MX4 here.Bought a big syringe years ago (3+),applied to countless PCs and laptops and it is still holding steady. 3/5 left or so. Half a pea applied every time. Done.
TBH, not sure if it makes a difference but only two machines were OCd which had it applied as well and they are quite happy to function.
Re: recomendation for thermal compound
As someone who has built one PC and didn't apply any compound, how stupid am I? I'm building a new one soon so watching this with interest. What is necessary for someone that won't really overclock? Also, is it really as easy as 'half a pea dollop, spread with gloved finger, have chilled performance smugness?'
Re: recomendation for thermal compound
If you aren't overclocking most fans do come with thermal paste already on the heatsink ready to go.
I usually replace the paste around every 18 months, got some Artic MX4 coming this morning which is supposed to be pretty good stuff (3XS approved on the Scan site) and it was only £5
Application can either do a pea sized amount the center of the CPU and the pressure from the heastsink locking in place spreads it, personally though I prefer to do grain of rice sized dots every half inch square and then spread evenly using an old debit card edge. This is one of those PC things where everyone has their own way of doing it, main thing to remember is that less is more, you cake it on like icing and it will have an opposite effect and become an insulator.
Re: recomendation for thermal compound
Thanks Ferral, that's well explained. Perhaps I'll look into overclocking the next build in the future and see what's what.
Re: recomendation for thermal compound
Arctic cooling mx-4 for me even used it on a ps3 once that was overheating.
Re: recomendation for thermal compound
Again vouching for Arctic MX4, it's affordable and easy to apply.
Re: recomendation for thermal compound
I did not realize the advancement in thermal compounds since my last build over 5 years ago. Interesting read so far!
Re: recomendation for thermal compound
curry paste. I guarantee it gets the heat to jump physics-defying boundaries.
Re: recomendation for thermal compound
As others have said, MX4 is ridiculously popular, and for good reason too! It's easy to apply and works great. Unfortunately for me, I found that after a couple of weeks to a month, my temps would go up around 4c - which is a small amount, but it made the difference of either 4.4Ghz or 4.6Ghz, so I instead applied the Noctua NT-H1 which came with my NH-D15, and haven't had an issue for months.
Just remember the performance per dollar (or pound) thing.
Re: recomendation for thermal compound
AS-5 and MX-4 are junk! Either use the liquid metal pastes or get some Gelid GC Extreme or IC Diamond! Both will trash these 2 Arctic Cooling pastes completely!
