    Broadwell-E - When?

I've been offered an ASRock Fatal1ty X99X Killer Motherboard together with 16GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4 so just need to find the finances for a new processor. I've been following the prices of a 5820K which seem stuck around the £300 mark but now with the recent leak of the Broadwell-E specifications I'm wondering if I should hang on to see what a 6800K is like in the bang for bucks stakes.

Anybody got any idea of when these will be available (just based on Intel history)?
Not in a real rush as my current set up is running fine and I'm fearful of buying a 5820k now and then regretting it later on.
But once you start thinking of a new build you do start to get a bit restless don't you!?

Not sure, but you could always buy now and then drop in a Broadwell-E chip later and sell on your 5820.

    Re: Broadwell-E - When?

It's great that technology moves forward so fast these days but it really is a pain for people that are looking to buy/upgrade isn't it? :/

As far as pricing goes I'd imagine it'll fall somewhere close to the 6700k but I'd rather go with that than the 6800k to be fair, there's still a lot of things out there that don't run with multiple cores/threads so it'll probably be better than the 800k in that regard. Could be wrong, let someone with more knowledge on the subject than me guide you.

True. But my concern is that this would just burn more of my limited finances. Especially as the 5820K would probably drop further in price when the 6800K's are available.
    Thanks for your reply though.

The 6700K would require a new motherboard so would cost me more and would probably be slower at re-encoding than my current set up! (I don't do a lot of that to be honest but I hate the thought of going backwards!)

    Re: Broadwell-E - When?

Intel's Xeon platforms work to a three year schedule I believe, so I'd expect the second half of the X99 processors (i.e. Broadwell-E) about a year and a half after launch.

Haswell-E launched August/September 2014 so I'd expect some time around March give or take a couple of months.

Core count didn't change between Sandy and Ivy, so I think there's a good chance of the 6820k only having six cores, and consequently not being little over the 5820k.

    Re: Broadwell-E - When?

Thanks EndlessWaves. To wait or not to wait, that is the question. The 6800K is a 6 core and looks to be the direct replacement to the 5820K http://hexus.net/tech/news/cpu/88142...es-20-threads/ but I can't be sure until more is know about these chips.

Nice. If the 8 core is the midrange chip then that should sell well.

    Re: Broadwell-E - When?

    Somehow I've 'accidentally' bought a 5930K
It suddenly dropped down to £347.11 direct from Amazon and I just couldn't help myself!

    Re: Broadwell-E - When?

It's still a waste of money at £100 cheaper than normal, I'd cancel the order. The only thing the 5930k offers over the 5820k is more PCI-Express lanes, 40 instead of 28, and perhaps slightly better binning.

I can't argue with you really, because I thought the same. However I'm still hoping to get a Broadwell in the spring so I'm thinking about the resale value. 5390K's fetch on average £100 more used on eBay than the 5280K's and yet only cost me £50 more to buy. I think this is because it is much preferred for SLI/crossfire setups. Obviously I expect these used Haswell-e prices to drop when Broadwell-e becomes available but I still think I'll recoup more of my cash by taking advantage of this offer price than if I'd bought a 5820K for the standard £300 price. Even if I'll see little/no advantage when running the chip myself.
I hope this makes sense? (it's what I've told myself anyway!)

    Re: Broadwell-E - When?

I've just double checked and the last four used 5390K's to sell on eBay in the UK went for £385, £343, £380 & £350.
