Running complete setup from a single mains outlet...

How many people here run a complete PC (Base unit, monitor, speakers and router/modem) from a single mains/wall socket using an extension? I've always heard people saying not to overload the socket, but i think a single 220-240V (UK 13A) mains socket with a 4-way extension would be perfectly fine, even if you do have a beast of a rig! I looked on the back of a 4-way surge protected extension and it says not to exceed 13A (3120 watts)... Just curious as i'm getting short on wall sockets in my office (aka gaming room ).

should be fine so long as the total load of all devices is under 3000w I have a 3 mains sockets in the PC room fed from a 2.2kva UPS, 1 sockets the combi boiler, the other runs the phone and modem and the 3rd feeds about 10 plugs for the PC

My bro in law who is a sparky guided me on wiring the house (passed an independant inspection 1st time) and gave me 2 tools, 4 grands worth of tester that pings back to the power station and a socket tester that cost him under a tenner, the later will help you find the fault

Technically, it is the current that is critical, not the power, because power depends on the power factor of the load, so you should not exceed 13 amps, including reactive current.

In practice, most equipment will have power factor of greater than 0.9 and at 230V that is equivalent to 2,600 watts.

Most monitors draw less than 100W, speakers an amplifiers (unless you are planning to stage a Glastonbury experience in your office) will take much less than 50W, leaving you a healthy 2,200W for the main computer.

Daisy chaining adaptors is not a particularly good idea (you need to consider the overall load on the first in the chain) and plugging high current single loads (like kettles or room heaters) is not a good idea.

    Other than that, no probs.

tl;dr version... Not a problem provided you are only connecting standard computer equipment and peripherals to it.

I have 1 x 6 gang and 2 x 4 gang daisy chained to a single socket under my desk with 10 sockets in use (though mostly for low powered ancilliary bits n bobs)

PC, monitor, NAS, modem, 2 x routers, printer, scanner, speakers & phone charger.

We run the same more or less, but today's electronics are so efficient that even at peak load it's drawing much less than a kettle.
