It is one of the models on my shortlist, another monitor I'm thinking about is the Iiyama XB2779QS 27" AH IPS Pro as this has 5ms response rate vs 8ms on the Dell, the build quality on the Dell wins over the Iiyama. I need to check on warranty and support for each. I was also considering Asus but increasingly I'm starting to have doubts about how well they support their products with their after sales services.

And yes, we do seem to agree on this, your explanations have been clear, helpful and very much on point, so thanks again.

    Dell state on their website:

If you experience even a single bright pixel, you can receive a free panel exchange under Dell's Premium Panel Guarantee
There was more on this here, thanks for pointing out Dell's above industry standard 'bright' pixel warranty, but it is worth noting that if I get pixels stuck in the off state then it will take up to 6 of these before they rectify the issue.

I might have imagined it, but I think I saw somewhere that Dell had a 2714 model in the pipeline. Has anyone come else seen or heard anything about this?

So they're not class 1 displays any more? That's a shame.

They are class 1, but according to Dell, the rules that govern that classification only refer to pixels stuck in the on state, usually manufacturers state 3 pixels that are stuck in the on state would require a warranty exchange where Dell will exchange for one pixel, but it takes 6 pixels stuck in the off state to get a warranty exchange. At least that's how I understood the description on their site.

Pixels stuck in the off state at that resolution will be far less noticeable than a pixel in the on state anyway.

Ah, sorry, the ISO I was going off (ISO 13406-2) has been obseleted (it stated Class 1 displays can have 0 bright, dead or stuck pixels per million pixels). In ISO-9241-3xx now there's a new Class 0 which has this, Class 1 now has a few pixel flaws allowed per million pixels as you state. Have to see which ISO they specify but suspect it's class 1 of the latter now (used to be the former).

Re: What screen type would be better?

I wasn't aware of the different ISO standards so that's good information, I think it is most likely that I will get a Dell, but have decided to wait until they release their 28" 4k panel as I think that may lead to prices dropping with 1440 panels.
