Why are 32" monitors so expensive?

Odd question perhaps, but let me explain the background:

A few years back my 26" LCD TV got nicked, and I replaced it with a 24" monitor (as I never watch TV, only DVDs/online through an HTPC). When we moved houe recently, the 24" monitor looks kinda small in the new living room, so I was thinking about upgrading. But it seems that while 27" 1080p monitors still start at around £150, 32" monitors are more than twice as expensive at best. 32" 1080p TVs, on the other hand, can be had for less than £250 - but then I'd be back into the messy business of arguing with TV Licensing and I'd be paying for a TV tuner that I just don't want.

So, if 32" TVs can be made for £230, why can't 32" monitors be made for a similar, or lower, price? They're the same size, use the same amount of materials, have less electronics ... I can imagine they wouldn't be as common, so market forces might not allow for many, but surely there must be a market for one or two 32" monitors in the budget end of the spectrum?

I didn't even realise you could get 32" monitors other than new 4k ones.

TVs use a far lower resolution than monitors of the same size (based on the ones I know of). There is also the idea of supply and demand I guess, lots more people want TVs.

I would just buy a TV, I can't imagine there will be much hassle with the license issue, and it's still far cheaper than a monitor of a similar size, tuner included.

I don't understand what you mean. A 1080p TV will have the same resolution as a 1080p monitor, regardless of the size. It'll be density of the pixels that affect its sharpness.

Re: Why are 32" monitors so expensive?

Question is, how many people are in the market for 32" 1080p monitors, vs. how many people are in the market for 32" 1080p televisions?

I know you mentioned market forces in your OP, but to my mind that's more than enough explanation on its own.

Re: Why are 32" monitors so expensive?

If I was going for a 27" monitor (which I did), 1080p for £200 is about good enough... but for 32" I'd certainly want the highest resolution available.
I'm not sure if it's the refresh rate, frequency or whatever, but monitors of the same size are just SO much better. This is reflected in the price.

My Mrs has a 1080p 42" TV... and, to use the vernacular of the young folk, it looks utterly 'pants'!!
I insist on watching movies on my 27" upstairs.

What he means is, 32" TVs tend to be usually 720p and occasionally 1080p, whereas 30"+ monitors tend to be 2560x1600.
