Deciding between a 24" IPS 1080p monitor Asus or Dell.

On Scan both the Dell U2414h or Asus mx259h are pretty similar prices.

I can't really hack my cheap 21.5" tn panelled LG monitor much longer, too small and cramped and the crappy viewing angles don't help.

I would opt for a 1440p but I don't think my 7950 would be much good at that resolution.

So it's either the 23.8" dell with a very useful stand or the 25" Asus. Which would you guys prefer or would you even recommend something else?

You don't give the details of your current screen but most 21.5" screens are 1920x1080, so swapping to another 1920x1080 is going to be equally cramped, although the larger size will mean it's not quite as small.

Consider a 2560x1080 screen as an alternative if you're demanding on performance and feel both 3440x1440 and the easier to drive 2560x1440 would be too much for your 7950.

    29" in 2560x1080 is equivalent to 23" in 1920x1080, 32" 2560x1080 equivalent to 25.4" 1920x1080.

So would you say the dell 25" 1440p U2515H is too much for the 7950 then? I do play games just not intense fps's etc. I just wanted to get a solid (preferably ips) monitor that will last for years to come. Being at 1920x1080 is ok for me but at 21.5" it seems miniscule and much more cramped than my old 22" monitor that was 1600x???

Just so you understand, neither Asus nor Dell manufacture anything on their monitors beyond the labels, and even those may be third party. Asus tends to source from either LG or Samsung, but you won't generally be able to tell unless you actually open up the monitor, violating your warranty. They don't print it on the box. Dell monitors were primarily made by BenQ, but they seem to have swapped over to some non-identified Chinese manufacturers over the last 18 months or so. So far, they seem to be fairly decent, but if I were in the market for a new monitor, and presented with these 2 choices, I'd go with the Asus, only because I know they are currently using better quality sourced materials.

Everything I've read says your 7950 supports 2560x1600, so it should do 1440, although I wouldn't bet you'd be able to game at max settings with newer programs.

Unless there's some overriding need, then stick with what's comfortable to you. Upgrading to a higher resolution monitor will sooner rather than later require an upgrade to a higher powered gpu. If possible, find a shop that is willing to demo a 1440 monitor, and see what it does for your eyes. Then decide on company.

Yeah, you've swapped from a fairly low DPI (90) to a fairly high DPI (102) so you probably want to stick to the larger screen sizes for each resolution is you preferred your former screen. The equivalent to your previous screen in 1920x1080 would be 24.5"

The TV notation that only refers to the height isn't great when discussing monitors because width has such a great impact. 1440p refers to both 2560x1440 and 3440x1440 yet there's a 30% difference in screen space between them so as you can imagine the latter is a lot smaller than the former on the same size of screen.

And in fact screen area shrinks for the same diagonal as the monitor gets wider. So a 27" 3440x1440 screen is physically smaller than a 27" 2560x1440 screen.

I haven't looked up which resolution the U2515H is but even at 2560x1440 that's 117dpi so stuff on it would be even smaller than your current 21.5" screen. I think 2560x1440 would be fine performance-wise if you're not running intense games but you'd want to be looking at one of the 32" monitors with that resolution to get a similar DPI to your previous 22"

I'm surprised Dell don't do any of the work in house given the reputation they've built, I'd have thought they'd at least have gone for some of the software or integration work.

Re: Deciding between a 24" IPS 1080p monitor Asus or Dell.

I was pretty much decided on the dell u2515 for the vertical height... however I've seen an Asus pb298q (29" 2560x1080 wide screen) that has got me tempted. Do you guys have any experience with the ultra wide screen format? I know I won't gain any vertical height but it's an interesting aspect ratio that could prove much more immersive in game and movie wise and I don't think I'd suffer in productivity as I'll have the extra screen real estate with its width. (Image creation and design software BTW)

Re: Deciding between a 24" IPS 1080p monitor Asus or Dell.

I would have gone for a Dell when recently buying a monitor if it wasn't that I found a decent 120Hz 1080p monitor going for ridiculous price. I got an Eizo FG2421 as gaming was main function for rig, I didn't want 1440p due to wanting higher FPS.

Reviews for the Dell U2414H & U2515H show LG make the panel. Besides the good reviews / recommendations, I liked the 3yrs warranty where you're not left monitor less due to swap out plus IIRC they have a zero "bright pixel" policy.

Dell has a much better reputation as a quality monitor manufacturer.

I can highly recommend the 23" IPS Dell P2314H if you can get hold of one still - brilliant picture and colours and virtually zero input lag if you are into gaming.

Dell as Asus customer support doesn't exist.

I'm always choosing Dell over Asus because of warranty support with Asus I was always wait weeks and with dell is just straight replacement no hassle.

My first monitor was an asus, its still going good however i've been purchasing dell monitors ever since because they offer tremendous value at certain price points. and great warranty.

Re: Deciding between a 24" IPS 1080p monitor Asus or Dell.

Is Asus support really that bad compared to Dell? Personally I've never had to use them, which I suppose may be a testament to their quality, but if Dell triumphs them, then I may have to side with Dell as I'm in the market for a second monitor. Currently using a Samsung S23 series, though my second one will likely be Asus/Dell after searching the current price offerings.
