    Can't decide between PG279Q or PG348Q - what points should I consider?

    Hi everyone,

I hope that you have all had a nice weekend.

I have a Dell 2713HM display at the moment and fancy a bit of a change. I also would like a new toy whilst I wait for the 1080ti cards and Kabylake K / Skylake-E to make an appearance.

So I fancy a new monitor but just cannot make up my mind which one; the cost difference between the two isn't an issue. I've read about Asus now upping the QA on the 279Q display since March but what about the 348Q?

I like the idea of the 348Q but its *only* 100hz and that is with an overclocked panel BUT it is ultra-wide and a big change from my 2713HM display. And what happens with games that don't support ultra-wide resolutions - do I just get black bars at the sides of the screen?

Then the 279Q is a native 144hz panel but it's the same actual size as my 2713HM so it won't seem like such an upgrade as the 348Q :-(

What other points should I consider whilst trying to decide between the two displays?

    Thanks very much, everyone.

    All the best,

    Moley

Do they both have G-Sync? What are the panel types?

I currently have the same monitor and will be making a very similar upgrade next month. I would recommend that you search YouTube for "34 widescreen monitor review" and watch some of the content. There are many excellent videos that not only review panels, but compare them against each other, show them in use with different content and provide useful insights after long term use.

I certainly found this very informative.

Would not recommend the pg279q, the backlight bleed on it is a big problem

Yes, in many titles that don't support 21:9 you would end up with black bars (letterboxing) on either side of the screen, but there's forums online to work around it for many titles. Something like Overwatch flat out won't allow it, unless there's some crazy cfg tricks I'm not aware of (plausible). I'd recommend the 348Q. The idea of "only 100hz" is rediculous. 30 is still standard, 60 is ideal, everything above is just a treat, and the extra 44 or 65 hz offered on ROG's 27in" monitors isn't going to improve your gameplay, or the immersion, compared to having nearly an additional 50% horizontal FOV.
