how the hell do you guys cope?

    seriously.

how bloody difficult is folding on windows? you guys have the patience of saints.

fresh vista x64 install on wife's new monster pc. passworded user account. every .NET framework anyone could want installed (i've seen some reports saying 1.1 is needed, some say 2.0). fah smp client installed into pre-created folder in user-controlled area with full permissions. install.bat run as administrator

and it still doesn't ****ing work right. i saw it actually do some crunching ONCE (and bloody slowly compared to linux) - one reboot later, and it sits on "working" without using any cpu time.

honestly, how do you cope? here's the linux procedure: 1) unzip fah somewhere 2) run "./fah6 -smp" in that folder. that's it.

good lord, i never thought with 14 years' windows experience i'd actually give up on something that's pissing easy on linux

Re: how the hell do you guys cope?

have you followed the SMP guidlines?

How do I install the SMP Console client in Windows Vista& - FaHWiki

the SMPD services need to be installed under the administrator account.

Thing is where does the fault really lie? We all know the SMP clients are buggy as hell. And we all know Vista throws a hissy fit when you try to do something odd on it.

I'm still not convinced the problem is wholy Vista. I just don't understand why they haven't rolled all the F@H clients into one package that will take the best advantage of a whatever system it is installed on. Surely the extra effort in producing some pollished and working software would yeald them a much greater throughput of results?

see instructions on running smp client in linux. it's certainly quicker and easier than typing out this post is.

maybe. doesn't change that it's pissing easy on linux, though.

Re: how the hell do you guys cope?

If its stuck on "working" after more than one reboot, the WU could be bugged - It happens on the windows SMP sometimes sadly.
Only solution ive found is to delete and restart

I have 4 gig and just cos it doesn't all show, and can't be addressed, doesn't make my 4 gig smaller than your 4 gig

    I like xp64

Have been running it on my quad for over three months now, and I've not had any problems at all. Everyone's always slagging it off, but really, it's been great! And I can see all of my 4gig

yes. yes it does. your 4 gig has been emasculated. the last couple of inches lopped off.

i paid for xp32 and xp64 for my home desktop, so i could experiment. valid COA attached to the case for both. xp64's the one i removed because it wasn't worth the effort of using it. even simple things like finding a good virus scanner become a chore with xp64, not to mention all the games that won't install/run (worse than vista)

Re: how the hell do you guys cope?

I think there's probably better compatability with xp64 now that Vista64 is out and more people are making stuff available for both OS's, there's a 64bit version of AVG free AV.

I must admit that I'm not exactly a huge gamer; I've not noticed any issues with games, I guess that's something to bear in mind! Getting the F@H SMP client running was a piece of cake though

I'm sure that now I've posted this it's going to be nothing but problems...

Whatever you had, I think you've passed it to me Directhex

For the last 2 days ive been coming back to see it stuck on the same percent and not move. This is a pain when I'm not at the machine.
Restarting the client solves it. Really very annoying.
