    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

I shouldn't also add that my two 24 core exchange servers are becoming virtual servers and so, become free in feb/march time as well.

I just need to learn how to run folding in an esxi environment to use them. Only issue I see is the limitation on the number of cores each vm can use.

Very nice. Who knows where we might be at Xmas then! The step change in our production was VERY noticeable when you had to downscale those servers at work and put them into production. Damned shame, but that was they were bought I suppose.

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat
    Need more cores!
Dude - you're going to be one of the fastest 1st millions that our team has seen! I can only think that Union1978 did it faster with his Sandy bridge plus GTX 580's (possibly in SLI). I'd have to dig through the numbers, but he did well over in the first month, which is a ridiculous amount to start with.

Until Stanford clarify their strategy going forward, I for one am sticking with Sandy Bridge. The lack of BIGADV recently, and the prior downgrading of the points by a good 10-20% has meant that CPU folding wont be getting you more points per £ spent vs GPU's. Anyone who follows my mutterings will know that I strongly suspect that NVidia's marketing people have been back in touch with Vijay and his team to address this points imbalance as they aint selling the volume of GPU's that they were 12 months ago.

The drop of GPU sales might be due to the recession, but it certainly also coincides with SandyBridge's release and the availability of high speed 8 thread processors. Nehalem was quite an expensive platform until SandyBridge came out, and since then memory prices have tumbled, as have the second hand prices of i7's.

If Intel did a 6 core, 12 thread version of the SandyBridge part and also if it overclocked like the current gen I'd be in the queue to buy one. Probably. If Stanford were also to lift the restriction on BIGBETA being Linux only, so that I could process BIGBETA units, then that would shove me in that direction, but to invest £2000 in a new rig that'll make my games run 10% faster, and that wont return me an appreciably larger amount of points is just beyond my current financial status.

Strictly speaking running the 4 rigs I've got going now 24/7 is beyond my means... I'm only doing this until Xmas, then backing off to 2 rigs up, with 2 temporary folders.

the new Nehelem-E look disappointing. Not a HUGE improvement vs my 2600K. Glad I'd decided to stick with the SandyBridge setup now.

Talking of GPU folding, anyone know where I can buy a Geforce GT545? 144 shaders at a decent clock at less than 70w sounds good to replace the GT240 in my htpc.

That's an OEM part, so you can't buy them new from retailers.

Best bet is ebay. Failing that, as the Cat.... (CAT-THE-FIFTH that is - our Ronnie and Reggie won't be able to help you)

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Well, since it's a Gigabyte MoBo, the BIOS is completely useless.

I use EasyTune and it's set that up to 48C the fan should run at 25% (apparently when it's lower it doesn't kick in at all), from there runs upwards rapidly, but since my load temp is only 49-50C, it still stays at 680-ish RPM.

If only I had an X6 to drop in there - my deal fell through, have to plough on with what I have

What speed does your 965 run at @ stock V?

I have a 1050T @ 3.5Ghz, I don't really need the power but unless it's worth my while I'd not want to downgrade

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

I haven't overclocked it, I undervolted - it's running 3.4GHz at 1.264V; I've no clue what the stock voltage is.

EDIT: as I suspected, stock is 1.35V, so I'm running 0.086V lower. It gives a measurable decrease in temps, something like 3-4C. Not to mention lowering my power consumption (maybe one day I'll get to recording that as well )
