    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Wiki tells me it's only 155W - I'm surprised. I was expecting nearer 200W. Then again, assuming between 80% - 85% efficiency at half load for my PSU, my 370W at the wall would be 295W - 315W actual draw. The Q6600 and 8800GTX between them would pull 250W by TDP, so perhaps that's not so surprising...

Then again, a GTS450 has a significantly lower TDP and wrings out almost twice as many ppd. Perhaps I should have upgraded rather than going watercooled SLI, after all...

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

The 'do we need more than 4GB RAM' thread has reminded me of something I wanted to try but couldn't be bothered.

RAMDrive increases PPD - has anyone tried this yet? The footprint is pretty small as well it seems.

That's another thing added to my to do list. Not sure if I'll see any kind of benefit from my main rig I'm rebuilding now, but On my server with 12Gb RAM this could be an excellent way of running some very quick virtual machines, which I will use for other nefarious purposes... Muhahahahahah!

Ok, restarted folding after a small break, and will fold 24/7 for the next couple of days - a small offset for the offline machines of others

Just noticed there is a new GPU3 client: 6.41.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Bahh, the saved details (IP address) on my ultraVNC has reset itself and I can't remember what it was!! So I can't access my PC from my laptop anymore so I can't update the GPU client or see why my PPD is going down

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Just reading the release notes that accompany 6.41

"The latest GPU3 client is now on our high performance client download page. This new client improves GPU identification and has several other minor improvements.

For those who are unfamiliar with the other FAH clients: there are several types of high performance clients. SMP refers to multi-core CPUs. GPU3 refers to the latest generation Folding@home GPU client. Currently, GPU3 is only available for NVIDIA GPUs, but we are working on a GPU3 release for ATI. For NVIDIA GPUs, we recommend GPU3. For ATI, we suggest GPU2 until GPU3 has passed through its QA testing (going on now). Finally, the v7 Folding@home client (currently in alpha testing) has these functions (SMP and GPU) built in and will not require a special client.

The changes to this version of the client include the addition of a -forcegpu flag ='nvidia_g80_1.0' ; this flag will signal a compute capability of 1.0 (GPU species=10); if the flag ''nvidia_g80' is used the compute capability will be reported as 1.1 (GPU species=11). Also a pop-up dialog box now appears reporting an error, if the -forcegpu flag is unrecognized; the client then exits."

Does this mean that you can force a Fermi core to process G80 units, or does this mean that you can no use the 6.41 client on G80 units and force it to use G80 code, therefore offsetting the performance deficit that existed when running the 6.3.. Fermi version on G80 processors?

ie, does this fix the slow processing of running G80 processors on the latest software release, thus consolidating the versions out there...

    Re: Folding Chit-Chat

Going off the forums apparently this just detects which card you have and sends more 'suitable' WU's depending on your hardware, with the aim of WU's eventually stop being sent to older hardware such as the G80's.

10-11k PPD. It is at 4GHz though. That's only 5 of the cores too.. If I let it have 6 and try to run the GPU folding at the same time, it drastically lowers the PPD.

I've heard mention that you can process BIGADV units on that SOMEHOW tricking it. Have you looked into that because your score would be massively greater with those bonus points...
