do all hi-def dvd players upscale?

Looking at getting a HD dvd player in new year(prob a combi hd/bluray).

Question is, if you stick a std DVD in them, do they upscale automatically or is it only certain players that will do this?
I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

I'm not sure if they all do it, certainly all the ones I've read about so far do it. If you're worried about SD upscaling though, all HD Ready TV's do it. And I don't imagine you're worried about upscaling, or buying a HD player, if you're not connecting to one

Re: do all hi-def dvd players upscale?

It would be to go with a HDTV(which I've yet to buy) which would be 1080p.

As I've got so many SD DVD's, I want one that will make my existing stuff great and next gen stuff even better.

Re: do all hi-def dvd players upscale?

No upscaler will make DVDs look great on a HDTV... It can make them look better, but still nothing like proper HD... The people who say upscaled is almost as good as HD are talking nonsense.

Edit: answering your question; I would say that its worth prioritising other features (HDMI 1.3 etc) over upscaling ability. If the player can't upscale, then the TV will!

Re: do all hi-def dvd players upscale?

    Hi

Upscaled DVD can look good, alot depends on the player and the quality of the disc
I've just got a PS3 and the upscaling is really good. I thought that the Fantastic Four upscaled was a good as the Bluray version until I compared the two - and even though the upscaled version was very good the Bluray version was so much better

    All the best

    RON
