Unhappy KN1 SLI Lite - new build / first build / problems

have recently put together my first computer from scratch

    Using;

    ecs kn1 sli lite motherboard
    amd 64 x2 dualcore 3800+
1 * 1 gig ram (ddr 400 pci 3200) not sure of manufacturer
    1 * 512 ram
    2 * 256 ram
    jeantech saturn case
    2 * 80 GB HDDs
    500w psu
    LG DVD ROM
    Lite on DVD RW.

However whenever i leave running, idle .. i.e a big download, or sometimes just when running a few applications, all too regularly the system completely freezes up, no response from mouse or keyboard and i am forced to restart the computer. Im certain the issue is not software based as have totally formatted, and reinstalled o.s ... multiple times.

Was hoping someone here would be able to point me in direction of cause of crash, I considered the different rams in the system a possibility but then it was crashing before they were all in there, when i only had the 1 gig stick in.

Im really drawing to a blank on this as I need my computer to be able to be on for lengths of time as I am a student and spend alot of time designing and authoring applications for coursework.

Eagerly looking forward to a reply, many thanks, M.T

Make sure Cool n'Quiet is off in the BIOS it seems to cause problems (it does for me anyway)

Also (as a matter of interest) could you run CPUz and see what HT and multiplier your board is running?

I think your problem is here:
1 * 1 gig ram (ddr 400 pci 3200) not sure of manufacturer
    1 * 512 ram
    2 * 256 ram

A64 CPUs don't like different memory modules. Check with memtest86+ www.memtest.org
Antoher thing is if you use 2pcs. of the same memory the speed will greatly increase because then the memory interface will run in dual channel mode.

    *update*

removed all but one of the memory modules, all to no effect though as still crashed.

Am now trying the 'cool n quiet' suggestion to see if that bears any results.

Check the CPU speed and multiplier using CPUz - what are they?

If you have the proper memory (2 identical modules) then it's dual channel.
Please post some spec. details of your memory modules and check if they are error free using memtest86+ (www.memtest.org)

hmm, have come to notice something about my crashing problem.

it only happens when usb products are plugged in, could an error in the plugging in of the case usb slots in the motherboards extra usb support plugs cause the system to freeze up when those ports incorrectly plugged in are in use???

my mp3 player was connected and that was fine. the one that seems to be connected and giving a problem is the bt voyager 1055 usb wireless adapter.

however, when idle it was fine, when i attempt to download a large file is when i get the problem.

the adapter is plugged into the front of my case not the rear motherboard usb slots.

Try putting all USB devices to the back of the case. I have 2 friends who have this same board....they both have front USB problems (crashes, freezes) but I do not. Kinda a mixed bag I guess since we all bought them at the same time from Newegg.

    Worth a try.

Also...couble check the USB connection to the mobo itself. Those pins are easy to bend and connect improperly. Open it back up and make sure the firewire and USB connections are correct. One tiny USB wire plugged into the wrong pin will cause problems.

    Good luck

removal of all usb devices except that device even when its in the back not the front doesnt seem to help the crash issue, have resorted to buying a belkin pci wireless network card.

Is the BT Wireless driver signed by MS? Have you tried another driver version. Maybe it's just a driver issue with Dual Core CPUs.
