Bios Update to run Vista on RC410L/800-M ?

    Hi,

I found this forum while googling around for info on updating the BIOS on my RC410L/800-M

Right now I am running XP flawlessly, but I have been trying to upgrade my OS to Vista. I have tried this numerous times under several different conditions (from DVD, cds, from hard drive, etc..) all with the same result:

It copies all the files & expands them without issues, then upon first restart I get a bluescreen telling me this.

    STOP: 0x0000005C (0x0000010B,0x00000003,0x00000000,0x00000000)

Initially, I googled that exact error and found a bunch of results pertaining to other non-ECS PC's - The solution is simple: update the BIOS.

I did a little more research and found that other people were having this exact issue on this same motherboard, and digging a little deeper BIOS updates on this board appear to be a little problematic.

I am confident that I can do the bios update as good as one can do it BUT...

I don't want to risk updating my board if the BIOS update is unstable!!

It would seem like a weird thing for ECS to do - Put up an unstable BIOS for download. But I have to ask:

Has anyone here (other than Tech Support) done a successful BIOS upgrade on the RC410L/800-M with the latest bios update ?

    or

Has anyone here successfully installed Vista wile running on this board?

Thanks, I hope someone here has some answers

Just for the sake of anyone else researching this issue, ill post my findings:

I Emailed ECS to see what they would do for me in the event that the BIOS update kill my board and got this response:

"If your BIOS flashing fails then you can contact the RMA department for a replacement.

Here is the link to the BIOS page.

    ECSDOMAIN/ECSWebSite/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?detailid=565&DetailName=Bios&MenuID=1&LanID=0

    How to flash the BIOS
    ECSDOMAIN/extra/flashutl/amiflash.htm"

I also emailed a guy who had this issue and was told that doing a BIOS update did in fact kill his board (NOTE: I don't have any idea how this person performed the procedure.) and the issue was never resolved after weeks of troubleshooting. He finally just bought a new DIFFERENT board.

So... sounds like it's a gamble..

I may just take the risk, update the BIOS, and get a new board if it messes up then send this one away for a replacement.

I am yet to find any concrete evidence that doing the update will in fact allow Vista to run.

Again Ill post my findings once I'm done..

Quite a lot of problems installing Vista is because they are dodgy copies, or driver problems...........If Vista can install on a 4-5 year old board, why should it have problems with newer boards.

Started putting this computer together at Christmas time, everything is less than a month old, and all my drivers have been downloaded from the manufacturers websites... I am using the Vista DVD that was sent to me from MSDN...

-This problem you get only on installing (windows VISTA)?

    -Which VGA are you using?

I am currently running XP flawlessly. This STOP error (Bluescreen) only ever occurs when attempting to upgrade to Vista.

I have tried the install using both the onboard ATI Radeon XPress 200 with no card in the PCIE slot, and also using my ATI Radeon x1650 Pro 512mb PCIE with the onboard graphics disabled. Same problem under both circumstances.

BTW... I should mention that I have downloaded and passed the Vista Upgrade Advisor without any issues

After checking into our Windows® Vista™ Ready Boards list, your motherboard is not supported on windows Vista.

You can Check on our ecs webpage.

    Lol...

So should I scrap this board and buy a new one?

I found a little bit of evidence on the web of someone successfully installing Vista on this board:

My main concern was the boards incompatibility with Vista. It just wouldn't install. It seems the new bios on the ECS website doesn't happen to be the very latest. They supposedly fixed the RAM issues everyone has been talking about here (I haven't run into that problem since I used only a single 1gb stick) and corrected the Vista problem. After flashing everything has been fine.

Here is the latest BIOS that will fix both the RAM and Vista issues: http://www.ecs.com.tw/dlfile/faq_file/STD-8110.zip (Flash with a diskette only!)
So heres another question: whats the difference between the rom you can download from ECS' download page (060526s.rom):
    http://ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Downloa...nuID=6&LanID=0

And the one they say to download in their FAQ Section (STD-8110.rom):
    http://ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Support...uID=65&LanID=0

STD-8110.rom appears to be newer (06/21/06), but they make no mention of it in their download section, and there is no ReadMe when you download it. Any more thoughts?

    Folks,
I managed to install the bios (STD-8110.ROM) , followed these steps
    1) created a bootable CDROM drive include the unzipped files from the above
    2) after booting ran the command to flash
including all the flags such as /p /b /n /c /x, this was based on the how to instruction on ecs
    3) after flashing, the machine froze( I literrraly thought that my MOBO was fried)
    4) any way I powered off the PC, used the pin on the motherboard to clear the CMOS (I did unplug the pc while doing this). put the pin at the regular place afer 30 sec and booted
    5) the system asked me to change the date, which I did and managed to install vista premium. Again please contact ECS before proceeding with any of the above steps since they are the best people to advice you on this.

Windows vista does not support all OLD motherboards, its because the chips is not compatible with vista.

To find out if your motherboard compatible go to ECS.

Your motherboard is not listed. ..

This seems to happen to quite a lot of people who flash the BIOS on this board. see this thread: http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=83863

I actually just came on this morning to report that I did in fact end up flashing the bios on my motherboard last night with the STD-8110.ROM version. I also was able to install Vista Ultimate without any further issues.

Here are the steps I took to update the BIOS on the RC410L/800-M ver 2.0 :
    - Downloaded STD-8110.zip from the ECS Faq Section
    - I downloaded a DOS 6.22 boot CD iso from here
    - I used UltraISO to add STD-8110.rom & AFUDOS.exe (extracted from STD-8110.zip) to the DOS boot iso.
    - Burned the CD using UltraISO
    - Rebooted into DOS by switching my CD drive to the Primary Boot Device
    - In my case, the CD drive was R:, so typed R:
    - Typed dir /p to make sure my rom files were there and the right size (and they were)
    - Typed afudos std-8110.rom /p /b /n /c (As per the instructions on ECS's website)
    - rebooted the computer
    - was prompted to enter BIOS setup by pressing F1
    - Reset to Optimal Defaults

This process worked fine for me. Once this was complete I booted up into Windows XP no problem and was able to upgrade to Vista from there, no STOP 0x0000005C errors, no Bluescreens!

A couple thoughts on this issue: After seeing all complaints about Bios Updates killing this motherboard, I only updated the BIOS knowing there was a chance I may have to send the board away to ECS to get a replacement. I already had plans to go out and buy a replacement board in the event that this process did not work.

Also, I'm still not sure what the difference between the 2 different BIOS versions ECS has on their site (STD-8110.ROM vs. 060526s.ROM), but to me, it looks like STD-8110.ROM is the better, newer pick (even though it's not listed in their download section as of 31/01/06). Plus, it worked fine for me and a few other people form what I can see.

Another thing I would like to note is that Vista has a ton of software incompatibility issues and I will likely be reinstalling XP sometime soon!!!

    Hi
I will inform Taiwan that the STD-8110.rom can fix the Vista installation issue.
Hopefully they will include the code changes in the official BIOS release.

Thanks to the posters above I was now able to install Vista on my PC with a RC410L/800-M motherboard.
I followed wzad's instructions except the additional "/p /b /n /c" command-line parameters were not necessary for the flash update to work on my system.
