You are a human being, you claim you are intelligent, but are you?

I had a bit of a debate with a lad down at work and whilst I can accept that certain people can grasp an understanding of a certain subject or skill quicker than other people can, I don't believe in many cases it's fair for people to assume they are more intelligent then someone else.

If one person knows IT fantastically well and is on the phone to said 'customer' now this customer knows nothing of computers but has a good understanding of car mechanics so his intelligence lies in a different field from that of the IT person, would it be fair for the IT person to assume they are more intelligent than the customer they are dealing with?

Whilst on this subject, do people believe that there are such things as just plain dumb? Or is it the fact that people are too lazy to learn? I don't think anyone is 'dumb' I believe anyone can learn if they want to, it's just as I stated earlier some people just seem to grasp things quicker, now whether this is down to there human brain or just down to there personality and how they were brought up I am unsure.

I suppose what I'm looking for out of this is what's your thoughts from your personal standpoint, on what human intelligence means to you? Is it a general thing? Is it a focus of a certain area/enviroment?
